A little history first, i am a 19 year-old male. Been told on several occassions that i have enlarged tonsils since birth, my mom tells me i used to get quite a few infections as a kid but in the last several years haven't had a single one. Anyhow about 3-4 weeks ago, i've developed a sore throat, went to the GP to have it checked out, she remarked that is is probably viral and it'll resolve shortly and on its own. And it did, after about 3-4 days all the pain was gone and i felt fine for another 3 weeks. However, about 8-9 days ago, on a saturday, i started getting chills and came down with a fever, in the course of that week, say sunday ondwards, i developed a rather severe throat ache, lots of yellowish/white pus on my tonsils, sort of floating around, some of it draining to the back of the throat. Hereby i should add that my right tonsil is disproportionatelly more swollen than my left tonsil and most of the pus was to be found on the right tonsil. Decided to go to the doctor again, she said it could be a reccurent viral infection, but decided to err on the side of caution and gave me antibiotics. Anyhow its been almost one week since the appointment and the pain has greatly subsided along with the inflamation, of both the throat in general and the right tonsil in particular. Furthremore i haven't had fever for the last couple of days or felt especially fatigued in any way, which was the case in the beginning of the "infection". However, the right tonsil is still swollen, maybe a little less than at the height of the "infection" but still rather large nontheless and there is still some pus on and around it although considerably less. I've been trying to feel out some lymph nodes in the neck area and i think i found one to be enlarged, on the right side, although i can't say with certanty, in order to feel it i need to push rather a lot into my skin, i'm not obese so that doesn't play a role. Planning to pay another visit to the GP tomorrow, but i did a little of research on internet and don't find it particularly soothing, i was wondering if someone could offer their opinion based on prior knowledge/experience. I'm pretty scared at the moment, contemplating on going to the emergancy room, pretty easy for me seeing as i live at a walking distance from the hospital. Would hugely appreciate some advice.
