Hi Kevin, as you know I've pm'd you with this reply, but seeing as you posted here as well I thought I would in the hope that others benefit as well as I think its sound advice (even if I do say so myself
The biggest thing I discovered was how my brain worked. I learnt how a tired mind doesn't function properly. I learned that a tired mind obsesses. I learned that a tired mind is NEGATIVE and I learned that a tired mind can scare it's owner half to death.
Now that I have come through my REALLY scary period and I now OWN the knowledge of what is going on, I can look at a post from people such as yourself and see that they too are scared and bewildered, just like I was. The only difference between you and me is that I now have the knowledge and you are yet to learn it, the trouble is learning this knowledge for yourself cannot just be written down here and be instantly understood - it is knowledge that needs to be learned at a level whereby YOU OWN IT.
It's a bit like me telling you how to drive a car. Lets say I have learned to drive and you haven't. I could write down how to drive here, how I drive, and you would read it and think you understand - but could you then go and jump in car and drive it? No you couldn't - and that is what anxiety is like - you've come across anxiety, for whatever reason and now you have to learn how to master anxiety, just like learning how to master driving a car.
So the very first thing you need to understand is getting over anxiety takes patience and TIME - it won't happen overnight and the more that statement pisses you off, then the more anxiety will rule, you have to ACCEPT that you have developed anxiety, that the cure is understanding it and that understanding it, mastering it takes time. I cannot stress enough that if you have no patience for anxiety, if you are DESPERATE for this thing to be over and to return to normal AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE then you will continue to suffer from anxiety BECAUSE you are being impatient and impatience breeds anxiety - anxiety thrives on impatience
- remember that etch that one on your brain.
Now you know that then you can start to explore how to get a tired brain FRESH again, because for me that is the number one best thing you can do for anxiety.
RESTING the brain is the best antidote without doubt and so you have to look for ways of how to rest it, rather than letting it agitate itself from morning to night as you are experiencing now.
CBT is a very good way of learning how to REST the brain - because you will learn that some thoughts soothe and comfort the brain and, as you already know, some thoughts agitate the brain from the very moment you open your eyes all the way till you go back to sleep. And, as you are discovering, these thoughts DO NOT make the brain FRESH 0- they keep it in a constant state of TIREDNESS instead.
This is something else you REALLY need to understand - a TIRED brain can SEE for itself that it isn't functioning properly (IE: you see it) and when it sees that it isn't functioning properly it worries itself about it. You see that's the thing about the brain it is the one part of us that actually KNOWS that it isn't working properly and that scares it. Does that make sense?
Imagine you've broken your leg - now YOU KNOW that you've broken you leg but your leg doesn't know that its broken, because it hasn't got the intelligence to know - but when your brain is broken (not working properly) it KNOWS and so it worries like f**k about it - and that is what is going on, THAT IS ALL THAT IS GOING ON - The trouble is all this worrying is keeping it broken (tired and worn out) and it just doesn't realise that - and it is that knowledge that you need to OWN.
I can write that here but the odds are you won't believe that yet, because your brain thinks its something worse, something more disastrous, something more SCARY
Well it's not - so the cure does not lie in shifting these thoughts, getting rid of these thoughts, because that is impossible A TIRED BRAIN WILL ALWAYS THINK SHITTY, SCARY THOUGHTS - mine still does, but it doesn't scare me as much anymore because I know it's is just my tired brain and I have rested it and SEEN it come back to me, SEEN it feel happy and feel great again that many times that I now OWN THAT KNOWLEDGE.
So the cure lies in RESTING the tired brain that is producing (thinking) these thoughts AND I guarantee you that when you do that when your brain starts to sense that all is well again then these thoughts will literally not bother you anymore. You might still think them, but because your brain is rested and FRESH it will not see them as DANGER anymore and so won't send you into a state of panic. I know this because I OWN THAT KNOWLEDGE.
So learn how to rest the brain. learn how to relax more, learn how to sleep well, learn how to turn those thoughts off by means of Meditation, learn how to change your thoughts patterns by means of CBT, learn how to nourish your body (exercising is good, but not crucial as long as you are not on the couch all day), learn how to nourish your mind and your soul and learn how to accept and be patient whilst your brain heals itself WHICH IT WILL but could take 3-6-9-12 months - which IS why anxiety is so hard to get over - because no-one has the patience for it.
IF YOU WANT TO GET WELL QUICK, THEN LEARN TO BE PATIENT - because the more patient you are with your thoughts, with your worn out brain - the faster it will recover. I push mine still even now and make it tired and when I do it weird things happen - but when I do I know how to get over it QUICK because I don't worry about it (no worries are allowed in) and it recovers quick
SO TO RECAP:IT TAKES TIME TO MASTER ANXIETY - BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO LEARN A NEW SKILL AND JUST LIKE LEARNING ANY NEW SKILL (SUCH AS DRIVING A CAR) IT TAKES TIME AND PRACTISE TO GET BETTER. THERE IS NO POINT GETTING ANXIOUS, UPSET OR ANNOYED WHEN LEARNING THE NEW SKILL BECUASE ALL THAT DOES IS SLOW YOU DOWN AND IF YOU WANT TO GET WELL AS QUICK AS POSSIBLE THE YOU MUST REMAIN AS PATIENT AS POSSIBLE - BECAUSE............:- IMPATIENCE IS ANXIETY FUEL.
Hope it helps someone
