I was diagnosed with an anxiety disorder about 8yrs ago.i have been on several different medications since but I always end up with a side effect called rem sleep behavior disorder.
My understanding is that the only antidepressants (ADs) you've been prescribed are the SSRIs. Have other types of ADs been suggested, SNRIs, tricyclics (TCAs),
the only thing that seems to help is Xanax or Ativan
Have you tried melatonin?
when I switched doctors he dropped to 1mg a day and said paxil would work.it didn't so now they say I am allergic to ssri's.
It is possible to be allergic to one or more SSRIs, but allergy to all of them is improbable. I think you need to get a second opinion from someone who knows what he is doing, preferably a psychiatrist.
It is very possible that the SSRIs are not the right AD for you, but there are many others. Two that spring to mind are the melatoninergic antidepressant agomelatine (Valdoxan) and trazodone (Desyrel). The more noradrenergetic TCAs are another possibility though I'd try either imipramine (Tofranil) or amitriptyline (Elavil, Endep) first.
Agomelatine is a hit and miss AD which works for some, but not for most, but because it acts on melatonin receptors may, and I emphasis the 'may' as I can't access the one study
done on this, provide a degree of protection against rem sleep behavior disorder (assuming you have it which I think still needs to be verified).
The main advantage of trazodone is that it is sedating AD which has fewer side-effects (beyond the sedation) than most antidepressants and has been used to counteract several SSRI side-effects. Like the SSRIs it does affect serotonin pathways, but in some unique ways which may not trigger the rem disorder. It also affects norepinephrine (noradrenaline) and dopamine pathways. A negative is that one of its metabolites is mCPP, one of the Ecstasy compounds, which can be detected by EMIT II urine tests for MDMA, so if you're subject to regular testing you will need to declare your use of trazodone. The good, or maybe bad, news is that you won't get a buzz out of the mCPP.
Klonopin witch falls into the same category as Xanax but is much stronger than Xanax
No, Xanax (alprazolam) is slightly more potent, the advantage Klonopin has is its far longer half-life, about 50 hours compared to about 11 hours for Xanax.
