16, depression, dysthymia, GAD, just a phase or hormones?
« on: March 03, 2008, 10:24:56 PM »
Hey I'm 16. I don't know what's up here.

This will sometimes go away for maybe a week or two, maybe even a month and I'll feel happy. It's that nagging feeling, like "this sucks" just in the back of your mind, even if I'm doing something that I love to do like soccer, I'll feel good but there's always that nagging feeling, or if something good happens to me, I'll be happy but then I'll get back to that sad state. I've always made it out to myself that it's completely normal and I'm fine and just going through a phase but I see other people, friends, whoever and they always seem so happy and I wonder, "is there something wrong with me?". There's never been anything big that causes this, but sometimes little things that I'll do wrong bring it out. I'm apathetic, and whenever I do something I wish I hadn't done or came out bad I'll justify it by saying to myself "whatever, I don't care anymore, It doesn't matter to me". I'm lazy. I'm sarcastic and what a lot of people would call a smart-0104. My parents have said that I used to be a really good kid with manners but since about a year ago I've changed. Sometimes I feel like my brain is working through a fog or something thick. Sometimes I'll feel completely blank. Also I had a panic attack about a year ago but I haven't had any since.

What is going on? I don't really want to talk to my parents about it and since I'm also homeschooled I can't go to a school counselor. I don't want any xanax, prozac, any Rx meds. I want to cure this naturally. For good. Without medication that just numbs the pain.

Also this isn't a horrible kind of sad. I don't cry alot, maybe I'll cry a very little bit or my eyes will water up every one or two weeks. I tend to keep things bottled up.
Thank you.

Can you talk to your doctor without your parents in the room?  I would let him know how your feeling.  It could be chaulked up to hormone changes or it could be something more serious.  If your doctor knows about it and how long it continues he can watch your progress.

Sounds like when I was your age really.  A feeling of being sad and depressed, but not to an "extreme" level where you can't function.  With me I feel like it was becuase I just flat out had so low self-esteem.  Most likely you don't like some things about yourself and they are always holding you back. That and any negative or pessimistic views in general.

I mean... it "can" be a phase that you come out of.  Teenagers go through a lot of things.  Or it could be something else.  But regardless you can get through it and feel good and I have done it without meds most of the time, so it's possible that could be the case also.

I guess it depends on more details.  It does sound a lot like me though where when you were doing something you like and that is fun it distracts your mind and you are able to feel good, but then the underlying feelings come back.  It's really some things you're thinking, not necessarily about yourself, but probably pretty likely.

idk if I can...

oh and I can't believe I left this out of the original post but I've had tremors in my hands for quite a while, at least 6 months. Other people have pointed it out to me and they joke about me having a seizure lol.

Mas, Hello.

Apart from the shaking I started round about the same age as you feeling low, and being aggressive and then upset for no particular reason, I was always the 'good one' who 'behaved well' but suddenly started expressing myself with aggression and upset and afterwards on my own would worry and feel deeply sorry, at the time I just thought it was teen hormones which it could of been but grew into Depression and Anxiety by age 19.

I've since learnt that if I'd talked things out more back then and opened up and got some help it could of been different.  I've recently been told that you can retrain your brain, not sure how, never got far enough to ask how as I'm a little set in my ways at 41.

16 is a difficult age and hormones play a big part, I'd let your doctor know how you are feeling so it can be monitored.

Don't be too hard on yourself and try not to over-analyze everything, you seem a lovely person.  My very best wishes.  Elm

Thanks :) yea I was the good one too and I over-analyze a lot of things. I'm not aggressive so much, but I've been speaking my mind a lot in the last year even if my parents don't wanna hear it. I'm gonna keep doing physical activities and sports to try to keep my mind off of things and try to change my state of mind and the way I think. If I can't do this on my own I'm probably gonna get help. I've really been dealing with on and off depression since I was 11. For 2 years when I was 12 and 13 it was hell except for summers :P at least it's not as bad now.

Also has anyone here heard of histadelia/high histamine levels? I think that could be a cause.
