Ive decided I want to come off klonopin and was wondering giving my daily dosage and length of time if you think its gonna be rough.
It would be easier to switch to diazepam (Valium) and to taper of it. The half-life of diazepam is about 4 times longer which tends to give a smoother ride as plasma levels are more stable, especially at small doses, but more importantly the dose compared to available tablets sizes gives you more options on the taper. The equivalent dose of diazepam is around 20 times that of Klonopin, i.e. 1.5mg Klonopin equals about 30mg diazepam, yet diazepam comes in 2mg, 5mg and 10mg tablets, giving you the option of reducing the dose by only 1/30th of your current dose if you cut a 2mg diazepam tablet in half, or even 1/60th if you quarter the tablet which is possible given their size. You can't do this with Klonopin unless you switched to the liquid formulation and even then it wouldn't be as easy.
I doubt you'd need to cut back that slowly. You will probably be able to drop the dose by 5mg every 3-4 weeks initially and then cutting the dose by 2mg once you're down to 10mg/day, followed by 1mg steps from 4-6mg/day and finally by 0.5mg for the last couple of milligrams. It takes about 3-4 weeks for plasma levels to stabilize after each dose reduction so cutting back faster may increase the severity of withdrawal effects.
BTW-it is by no means certain that you will experience withdrawal. While a high proportion of those with anxiety do experience it, other benzodiazepines treated patient cohorts such as epileptics are much less likely to which suggests withdrawal effects are driven as much by psychology as chemistry. Expect to suffer greatly and your mind is likely to deliver the full catastrophe for you.
