How long do panic symptoms/sensations last?
« on: March 02, 2008, 11:57:26 AM »
I was curious about this.  We all seem to have similar symptoms:

pins and needles/numbness/burning sensations
choking sensations
heart palpitations/racing
stomach issues, reflux
brain fog, confusion, inability to concentrate
sensitivity to light, sound,...........

How long do these sensations last in everyone?  I think their ability to linger on and on is a big reason why HA is such a hard thing to work through.   We start to think that something really IS wrong, the more these sensations seem to stay.

For me, the everyday GAD symptoms are some brain fog/dizziness, and just a slight anxious feeling that is worsened my any kind of stress -- which can lead to me swallowing a lot to calm myself or slight shortness of breath.

When I'm having a full-blown panic attack, I normally start to have trouble swallowing, trouble breaths, heart palps, choking sensation, stomach issue (diarrhea), I get weak feeling like I have the flu, sensitive to sounds and shaking.   It normally lasts no longer than 30 minutes.

Those are  my exact symptoms as well littlemiss. The only thing I will add to it is; racing pulse, head spinning as I go deeper into panic mode, kind of half dizzy. I  am told by my wife she can tell when I am having an attack because I will pace a hole in the floor, as well as repeatedly going back and forth to a mirror poking and prodding myself. (Nothing quite like OCD mixed with HA)

My symptoms persist for days to a week or more. It depends on the severity, since I started Paxil 6 weeks ago I am doing a little better thanks to that and the Xanax.

For me symptoms can last as long as a whole day!! If i get a panic attack in the  morning and hopefully talk myself through it, i will still be anxious for the rest of the day just not as bad as the full blown panic symptoms, dizzy, hard to breath ect... I will just pace around the house hoping it goes away but it is soo hard to think of ANYTHING ELSE when it is happening to you.

For me it seems that symptoms see to linger quite a while, the more I think about them the longer they last...
Ive been dizzy off and on for about 2 weeks now, thats the latest focus for me !!!!!!!!

From the very small, statistically insignificant poll...it seems that most people who responded experience consistent symptoms for more than a week.

I fall into this category myself.  I have had some numbness in my toes for a while.  It seems like it has been there for weeks.

I have been trying to figure out why these sensations last for so long, and how to reduce them.  I know that it is caused by extreme stress, however it is a horrible circle of having HA, feeling anxious/stressed/panicked, having sensations, feeling anxious about why the sensations are not going away, feeling anxious about my disease again.....no wonder I have such a hard time letting go of my fear!!!

I work out a lot, eat well, take xanax as needed (about 0.25/day), and try to not focus on symptoms.  In spite of this, I fall back to worry very easily because of these sensations.  Is it just a matter of waiting it out?  Does anyone have an understanding, other techniques to reduce it, or just any thoughts on this?  If we can make these symptoms happen so quickly, can we make them go away?
