So I recently had some time off for mental health issues, and i thought i made some great progress, but 2 days back to work and im freaking losing it. i was walking from my car to my office and was a bit sweaty, i got in the office, went to plug in my fan and recieved a shock from the AC outlet in my office. it was obviously either the sweat or i think i had my finger touching one of the prongs as it went in. either way it was quick, i have no burn on my finger, it tingled for about 30 minutes and that was it. we have an employee health center with a doctor that knows my health anxiety history and ive known him for years, i trust him...as much as a hypo can trust a doctor.
well anyway, i was asking about tetanus shots and such because it's been almost 5 years since my last booster and i read online that after shocks its sometimes a good idea to get one. he refused. not in a mean way, but he said that part of my recovery process has to be about accepting the diagnosis from the doctor, we all know that, but im struggling right now. he checked my finger, my pulse, and said i was fine. this was like 4 or 5 hours after the shock happened.
its also important to note right now that im on Bactrim DS antibiotic for something completely unrelated and actually medically confirmed. i woke up today with a red spot, looks like its a bruise but it doesnt have that characteristic purplish tint yet, so i cant tell. the spot is on my OTHER arm, so im thinking that might be the "exit point" of the shock...but the "entry point" on my left finger is fine. no redness, no bruise, nothing. i also noticed my arm itself is a bit sore. ive done more googling in the last 24 hours than i have in the last year and im so worried its something like renal failure from the shock if it went through my liver or kidneys or something, to what i said earlier which is maybe thats the exit point and the voltage went through my heart! i checked my pulse throughout the night and it was steady in the 80-100 normal range, so i just dont know.
now, a rational (normal) side of me is looking at other more likely causes. well the way my desk is setup at work is an L shape, so my left arm gets to rest on a flat surface while my right arm i actually do have to "hold up" a bit...since i havent been at work for a month or so, im thinking that it could just not be use to this anymore (my calves even hurt from walking the 5 blocks to and from my car the last 2/3 days). also, my desk is decent, but the right arm that is not held up by desk also rests on the edge of it, and i noticed the red spot i found this morning is curiously close to where that contact is made. during the day i definitely do put pressure on that area and move it around since its my mouse hand. but would it really have taken until the next morning to show up on my skin? it was NOT there last night and it is there today. the sore muscles are also a bit better when i woke up which made me a little better in spirit, but i do notice that they hurt while im sitting here holding my arm up ever so slightly at my desk.
so basically: shocked, worried about tetanus, my heart, my kidneys, liver, internal organs, and the worst would be some kind of brain damage that i dont know about yet. im assuming that would be instant, but this red spot was not. also, the bactrim ds i am on did make my muscles and joints ache when i started taking it, so its possible they are still easily made sore, and possibly even easier to cause brusing based on side effects--but those side effects say to contact my doctor immediately and i have only a few days left on my Rx, so i dont think stopping would make sense.
im FrEAKING OUT RIGHT NOW. i dont know if i should go to an ER or what. im at work, trying to stay here and convince myself i am fine and was re-assured by a doctor, but he didnt really do any tests other than my pulse check and looking at my finger.
if anyone has any experience with this, or if you know a doctor or nurse, for god's sake i am begging for some kind of answer here. i feel like all the work i did this last month is just out the window. i also cant stop chain smoking my e-cig now and was trying to cut back on that, but that's the least of my issues now.
all because im an idiot and plugged in a fan when my hand was sweaty.
