Listened to Coast to Coast last night and they were pushing a herb called Tumeric/Curcumin as a great healer of various illnesses even depression.
Tumeric is the spice which gives mustards their yellow colour. Curcumin is a component derived from the spice by solvent extraction. There is some evidence of a mild antidepressant effect, mostly in animals. There have only been two studies in humans, one found
a significant effect similar to that of the fluoxetine (Prozac) treated controls, the other found no benefit
compared to placebo. OTOH, it appears to work well in rats. It seems very little
, if any of curcumin penetrated into the brain. Its bio-availability is also low, most of it ends up being excreted. If you wish to try it look for supplements which contain the pepper extract piperine
which increases the bio-availability of curcumin.
Can you take it with meds?
