Thanks! I will share my colonoscopy story in the hope that it might help alleviate others' anxiety about the procedure. Before my procedure, I was scouring the Internet searching for THE story of an overly anxious person having a successful colonoscopy that would reassure me. And while there are a lot of stories of anxious people getting successful colonoscopies, there was not and never will be a story that will eradicate one's fear of a colonoscopy. You can't wait for your fear to go away before you get this procedure. It will not disappear. You WILL lose sleep prior to the procedure and you WILL be scared. If you're like me, you can not control how you feel but you can control your actions. No matter how scared you are, if your doctor recommends you get a colonoscopy, you CAN get one. And after you get it, you will feel brave for overcoming yet another fear. People often think anxious people are not brave but I think you need fear to have bravery. And who has more fear than an anxious person? :) but to get off my drug induced soap box, here are some of the things I did, which while they didn't eradicate my fear before th procedure, they did help me get through it despite my fear.
Talk about your fears with a friend
Do NOT search the Internet
Write down what you fear about the procedure and ask the dr, the anesthesiologist, the nurse, etc. no matter how irrational you think your fear is, ask
When you get your answers, trust in them as much as you are able to
Write a funny note on your bum before the procedure. Don't know if the dr was amused but doing something so silly at a time of stress really relaxed me
I told the nurse, physician and anesthesiologist about my crazy irrational fears today and they helped me get through it. Sorry if I rambled a bit there and rereading my post, it's more of unsolicited advice than a colonoscopy story, but hope it helps someone all the same.
