So anxiety is very new to me, it really only started a couple of weeks ago. It may or may not be related to a zinc/copper imbalance (my chiro's theory).
The Dr at the ER gave me some xanax, which seems to be doing wonders for me, I went to work this week (after two weeks basically off) but I'm concerned about being on it to long. (I'm doing 1mg a day or less right now, for 8 days now).
Benzodiazepines are very good anti anxiety meds, but are, IMHO, not good primary meds because more and more doctors are becoming wary of prescribing them because of the perceived dependency issue. Therefore, they should be used as needed for breakthrough anxiety, or short term to ease the initial side-effects of antidepressants.
The chiro recommended a pharamgaba and 5 HTP supplement instead, which I finally got up the courage to take last night (and yep I didn't die).
Placebos rarely kill anyone, though choking is always a risk so they are probably best taken by flushing them down the toilet. This will alleviate the risk without diminishing the therapeutic benefits.
The neurotransmitter GABA is synthesized in the brain as a by-product of the citric acid cycle
, aka Krebs Cycle, which provides the energy that fuels the brain. No normally functioning brain is ever deficient in GABA. Indeed there is so much of it that the blood-brain-barrier contains billions of tiny pumps to remove it from the intercellular fluid (Kakee A
, 2001). what the brains of those of us with anxiety disorder lack is benzodiazepine/GABA complex binding sites (receptors) and the ones we do have tend to be less sensitive1
. Trying to overcome this deficiency by adding more GABA is akin to fixing faulty spark plugs in cars by filling their gas tanks to overflowing.
Similarly, the use of 5-HTP is based on a faulty premise. Our brains do not lack serotonin, nor do antidepressants work by increasing serotonin levels, though they do cause a temporary increase initially which produces many of the start up side-effects, particularly heightened anxiety. However, their longer term effect is to reduce serotonin synthesis and expression in brain regions which mediate emotions. See: Serotonin: The 'chemical imbalance' myth
If anxiety has only just become a problem then the first thing is not to panic. This may be a temporary aberration which will resolve itself. Exercise and omega-3 fatty acid/fish oils supplements may be beneficial. If they don't help and the anxiety doesn't resolve itself then the only treatments with a proven track record are antidepressants and/or the cognitive/behavioural/mindfullness therapies. Your doctor will be able to advise which is the best option for you.
