I'm a bundle of nerves-HELP!
« on: February 03, 2008, 04:52:05 PM »
Well, the bleeding with bowel movements continues.  My mother thinks it's funny and my husband just gets mad and says I'd better not really have something this time b/c if I die I'll leave him alone with five dogs and a screaming six year old child.  I'm convinced I have colon cancer.  Now I'm scared to go to the bathroom, scared of all the blood, of looking at it.  And each time after I "go", I panic even more.  Why do these symptoms always get worse on the weekends when there's no doctors open or around except at the E.R.??  Can someone please calm me down?  I just got done with a COPD/asthma scare, and I thought I was going to be able to enjoy a few weeks of good health (Ha!) before I had another symptom show up.  Anyone?

Is this bleeding a new thing or is it something you have had before and been investigated for and all okay???

Most cases of bright red bleeding are due to internal hemmoroids.  Blood mixed in the stool is much more likely to be from something serious but even then it can be from a simple stomach ulcer or even bleeding gums!!

If you really are losing huge amounts of blood then obviously go to ER as you may have hemm that needs seeing to.

Thanks for the reply.  Yes, I've been investigated for rectal bleeding before-last March I had a colonoscopy b/c I had been experiencing rectal bleeding, and it came out fine.  That's why I know I'm freaking out for no reason, but I can't settle myself down.  Do you think I should call my doctor, or do you think the last colonoscopy report is recent enough that I don't need to worry?

I would call your doctor as there may be another issue to deal with besides cancer.

It's definitely a scary thing to see blood in the toilet bowl . . . but there are a lot more likely causes than colon cancer. Especially with your recent colonoscopy! Last year some time I started freaking out about this. In my case, it had to do with my diet-- a lack of fiber making the stools hard and uncomfortable to 'get out.' And of course, it was a consistent thing- so whatever was causing discomfort and bleeding didn't have time to heal. About a week of softer stools, and the blood disappeared. Lots of water, raw fruit/veggies, and oatmeal helped instigate this change. :)
