There is a great book called "Phantom Illness" that you should get. It's about a news writer who realizes she is a hypochondriac and did research on the condition with a physician. A great book and a good read (at least for those with Hypochondria). It has a quote that I just can't remember exactly. It's something like Aids was made for Hypochondriacs, not literally of course but meaning it is such an all inclusive disease that it can affect any part of your body. We are all finished. It is tailor made for all of us.
Tell me. Who doesn't feel something at least once a day? A person who doesn't suffer from this Hypochondria doesn't give it a second thought, but we become obsessed with the symptom or sign. So whenever any sign or symptom pops up, Hypochondriacs now use the computer to look up AIDS in your case, other serious diseases for others, and inevitably, one of the symptoms or signs, that you probably don't have, will be in there. Then your heart pounds, you start sweating, and you say to yourself you definitely have it. I have OCD and the worst part of my OCD is Hypochondria. I am 55 years old and have been a Hypochondriac since the age of 14. I am a professional Hypochondriac.
A few things I am going to tell you that I would really like you to concentrate on.
Unfortunately, at least to my knowledge, Hypochondria ONLY responds to medication. From what I have read, things like Behavioral therapy, etc, are not effective.
I'm not sure if this is possible without taking medication, BUT NEVER EVER LOOK UP ANY DISEASE ON THE INTERNET OR A BOOK. You will always find something that leads to something else that will lead you to something else until you finally have some serious disease. What I am saying is common Knowledge I know that, but I feel it is important to let you know.
You have to see a Psychiatrist because they are the only people in the Psychology profession, that can write for medication.
Now I know you are at the age where you Hormones are off the wall, but most Hypochondriacs, fear something like AIDS if they, for example, just come in contact (Skin to skin-like hands) with someone who to them, looks gay. And Gay to most Hypochondriacs equals HIV. I have no idea why you would go to a prostitute of that kind or any for that matter. It's like having a severe allergy to peanuts and buying a container of peanuts and start wolfing them down. We don't live in the same world as we did 40 years ago.
You do know why you are focusing on this specific disease. The answer is very typical for people like us. Why do you fear you have HIV. You said it yourself. It will stop you from getting the job that you have always wanted since childhood. Not any other disease are you concerned with at this moment because HIV is the road block to your happiness.
In your specific case, I feel that "Slangevar" did a great job of putting everything in perspective.
Try sitting down and do some serious soul searching. Try to understand who you are. What things will eventually cause you sever anxiety. Those types of things. If you live with your family, and I don't know your situation, ask them for help. That's what most families are there for. To be there for one another
I wish you all the best. Everything should turn out well. Learn a lesson from this. They say a wise man thinks ahead. You should live a good, long, healthy life, always trying to make the right decisions.
