Swollen Lymph Node In Neck? Getting a Little Worried.
« on: March 23, 2013, 03:02:04 PM »
In the left side of my neck, I have a small little knot like thing that I think is a lymph node.  It's pretty small, I would say about lima bean size.  It's not hard, it feels soft and squishy. I can move it around as well and it's tender to touch.  My mom says it's just a lymph node and I shouldn't worry, but it's not that easy for me.  I checked my temperature, everything is normal no fever.  I feel completely normal right now but every time something small comes up like this, I already have it programmed that I have some horrible thing like the c word.  Every time I've went to the doctor for something small like this, everything is fine and he says I have nothing to worry about.

The problem is I can't help but worry.  I first noticed it on Wednesday.  I did have allergy problems in the fall, so I don't know if that's what could be causing it.  Should I give it a little more time and if it doesn't get better think about making a doctors appointment?

I wouldn't say it's on the side of my neck, but it's like right under my jaw but towards the left of my neck.

Your neck tends to have dozens of those little squishy things called lymph nodes. It is extremely unlikely that it is cancerous. If it keeps bothering you, you can go to the doctor's so he/she can calm your fears, but I believe your fears have little to no basis.

Everyone has those.  Sometimes they get smaller, sometimes they stay noticeable.  It happens.  Squishy and moveable is a good thing.  If it's bigger than usual and hurts it may be infected, or you're fighting off an infection in your body near that area.  My mom gets lymph node infections and takes antibiotics for them as they are very painful, but the times I've gotten infected lymph nodes, I've just let them do their thing and they've eventually gone back down on their own.

Thanks for your advice guys, it helps.  I've tried to restrain myself from googling because I know it's going to do nothing but make it worse.  It's really hard for me to get something out of my head once it starts up.  Hopefully this will get better soon, if it doesn't should I best schedule an appointment for the doctors to make sure it's ok?  It would probably put me at ease, but hopefully it just goes away on its own.
