Attendance issues
« on: March 23, 2013, 02:25:31 AM »
My major problem when it comes to treatment is getting out of the house. It's not the place that scares me, but the getting there. I have to take the bus. >< Does anyone have any tips on getting through this? It just feels like no matter how many times I get myself out I'm still anxious the next time around. =/ I guess cause once one worry is concord, a new one takes it's place. >< I've tried breathing, listening to music, bribing myself. Walking out the front door is one of the hardest parts of my day.

Hi,

Not sure if this is a possibility, but is there someone who might accompany you to your treatments? Or, is there a volunteer organization that might match you to someone who would be your mentor? Do you know where the trigger is? For example: is it being around people on the bus? Is it being in a moving vehicle? Is it fear of the treatment event itself? Even though walking out of the front door is one of the hardest parts of your day, you need to recognize that you have accomplished this so give yourself some points . . .perhaps if we could have a few more details as to what seems to cause you the most anxiety, we might be able to give you some more concrete suggestions ..  . take care, kc

Hey, I know exactly how you feel. I've missed lots of school, events, and appointments because I just can't make myself leave my apartment. I'll get dressed and have my bag packed but then have a panic attack when I need to walk out the door. Most of my fear is having people look at me or be around people I don't know or the idea that someone might accidentally touch me.

What's really helped me is scheduling weekly times to leave the house. My friends help me out by adhering to the scheduled days we set, I know every Thursday night I see one of my friends, and every Friday day I have lunch with my best friend, on Sunday's I go see my brother and sister-in-law. The schedule helps me get out even more because the routine helps calm my nerves, I know on those days what I'm doing, where I'm going, and who I'm going to be with. I also bring water, a snack, and music to help because I take public transit as well. I hope this helps.
