is this a phobia?
« on: March 22, 2013, 02:26:30 PM »
I have Hypochondria and I have an irrational fear of rabies and I try to stay away from dead and alive wild animals at all costs... I was wondering if this was a phobia because I desire staying away from it and when I do come into contact with it, it makes me go into a downward Hypochondria spiral and also for that reaswon I keep my light on in the hallway and my door open or my door closed and my bedroom light on so that if a critter were to cast a shadow I'd see it and stay calm and so that if a critter were trying to get into my bedroom it wouldn't because my door would be closed. is this Hypochondria+ phobia? phobia? Hypochondria? I'm so confused about this irrational fear since I think I can get it any way and since I look the routs itcan take to get you infected again and again yet I'm still shaking waiting for the end from this dreadful mental issue of mine and waiting if I show symptoms of rabies so that I know if I'll die. I have the fear lots of times and will have it many times more before I die, I can't get rid of it, it's like a shadow.

It sounds like a mixture of a few things. You are obsessed with this whole idea. So much so that it can take over your life if you ever see a dead animal. Not sure I would class it as a phobia. Unless the phobia was of rabies. In which case we could place it right back at Hypochondria again. Thus meaning it is just an anxiety you have surrounding rabies. Not sure what kind of area you live in? If there lots of dead animals lying around? That would set the fear off big time. But once you keep away from them. Wash your hands. Stay clean of all germs. You should be just fine.

I'm not sure it's a phobia but as Cuchculan says you're definitely obsessed with it. I know you said in another post there are a lot of dead racoons near you, keep away from them as they do carry germs, but you need to be bitten to get rabies and dead animals can't bite you. But if you come into contact with dead animals make sure you wash your hands well afterwards.
