menisucs tear
« on: March 22, 2013, 10:46:41 AM »
Hi everyone,
I recently hurt my knee at the gym and was diagnosed as a meniscus tear (no MRI so not sure where exactly the tear is).  My mind is doing its usual and I am telling myself that I will never be able to workout ever again and that the swelling will never go down and and I am always going to be in pain.  Has anyone experienced this and if so can you give me some insight as to how long it took to heal and if you could go back to doing normal activities.

I tore my meniscus last year.  Surgery went really smoothly, I was walking (with a cane) the same day, very little if any pain.  I was off pain meds in a day.  I stuck to physical therapy 2-3x/week and I was jogging in a couple months.  You'll do great.

I can offer some advice .... don't rush into surgery.  There is evidence that a meniscus tear can be repaired through physical therapy.

I've actually known quite a few people that have had a  meniscus tear ... some did surgery, many did not.  There was a longer recoup time with surgery, plus the cost and down-time associated with it.
