Question about fish oil??
« on: March 22, 2013, 10:26:38 AM »
I have tapered off of Lexapro, been off it for almost a month now, no problems. So I want to give fish oil a try. I'm just wondering if it can cause an upset stomach? I already have stomach issues constantly, and I'm scared to make it worse. Anyone with any insight about fish oil, any info would be appreciated! Thanks.  :happy0151:

It shouldn't cause stomach issues, however, it can cause diarrhea if you take too much in one go. You need to take around 4-6 x 1,000mg capsules daily to get a positive effect. Start with one 1 capsule a day, increasing by 1 every 3-4 days and splitting the doses across the 3 main daily meals.

NOTE: I'm not a doctor, and particularly not yours, so there may be factors I'm unaware of. Therefore all advice is of a general nature and you should consult your doctor before following any of it, especially before changing med doses.

I agree with spreading the doses throughout the day, it may help get better absorbtion.  I have a fairly sensitive gut and the only time i've had stomach upset is if I exercise (run) right after taking it.  I also take Krill Oil, very small pill and no fishy burps.

I take 4 1000mg fish oil pills every day.  Don't take them all four once; spread them out, at least 4 hours apart.  I take one with each meal and one at bedtime or with a snack.

Always buy the enteric-coated pills that dissolve in the small intestine so as to avoid fishy burps.

I take them more for cardiac health, although some people report anxiety relief.  Try it.  I hope it works for you.  (Talk to your doctor first if you are on a prescription blood thinner.)

The Omega-3 oils are also supposed to help with dyslexia.  I take gummie-bear versions of them for said purpose, usually having about 6 of them a day with my breakfast.  I've tried going off of them once because my mom thought they weren't doing anything and were too expensive.  The huge dip in my grades afterwards basically proved how helpful they'd been.  But it's a gradual change so I didn't really notice anything at first.

Now, if I've neglected to take my gummies for more than a week, I have more "bad days" where it just feels like somebody took a blender to my thought process.  They're really, really helpful.
