BP Again
« on: March 22, 2013, 10:13:25 AM »
I posted this in the wrong forum.

Last year I was very worried about my blood pressure.  It was averaging 140/90 but with exercise I got it down to an average of 133/84.  In the summer I even averaged more like 124/82.  I stopped taking it in the summer.  Because I will be going to the doctor soon I decided to check it again recently.  It has gone back up.  I know in the winter I am not walking nearly as much and have gained weight but I still find this very stressful.  This morning I took it again and it was around 145/94.  I took it when I got up but I thought about taking it while in bed for a 1/2 hour before getting up.  Would that have upped it?  Does anyone know if BP naturally rises in the winter with cold weather?  I am going to get back into walking but now I have triggered my anxiety again.  My logical brain says I can get it down again but my emotional brain says it's high.
I wish I could shut my worry brain off.

Hi, I'm a nursing student and to be honest with you 140/90 and anything about is considered hypertension. However!!!! Before you freak out! How ok are you? Do you smoke? Do you drink coffee? What is your baseline BP? It's not like you went from 100/75 to 140/90 right? Stress and anxiety can greatly alter your BP! For instance, mine is usually 90/60 but I went to the Dr yesterday and it was 124/80. Wow can you say white coat syndrome lol!

I would chat with your dr about your BP readings, your baseline readings, your lifestyle and things you can do to decrease it. Because it isn't necessarily high to e an issue today, but higher blood pressures over time can potentially cause people problems. Your dr should be able to help you modify your diet (decrease salt & caffeine maybe) to get your readings a little lower!

But don't stress about it, it will only cause it to be high. In all honesty, 140/90 is very mild to the hypertension I see in the hospital. So try to keep it in perspective, your like on the low border of hypertension and it maybe be totally normal for your body. Everyone's body is different and ranges for BP are statistical reference ranges, there isn't a true black and white written in stone range of "normal" that would apply to everyone. Know what I mean?

My friend who is an internist/cardiologist said that blood pressure is typically highest in the
morning when you get up. He also has told me that losing weight and taking deep breaths
before taking your blood pressure can help lower it. He also said that their are many over the
counter supplements that can help lower blood pressure. He also said that in many cases,
high blood pressure is hereditary.
