Heart worries?
« on: March 21, 2013, 07:32:11 PM »
Hey again

I hate that I'm even posting. I was doing incredibly well getting over my health anxiety.

My previous fears are gone, and I was completely ok for a few weeks, but then I hear from my grandma that she has heart problems that she's going to the doctor to get checked out.

So now I'm worrying, "What if I have heart problems, too?"

I'm only 17 so my brain knows it's incredibly unlikely. But I'll get chest pains in the upper left or center of my chest and back and start freaking out. Pretty sure my reflux has been acting up, but when I'm panicking it doesn't seem like the likely solution.

It doesn't help that there are a lot of commercials on TV saying that "women's symptoms of heart attacks are more vague than men's symptoms"

I went to the doctor a few weeks ago and my blood pressure was normal
I haven't had an EKG in a while
And I went to a cardiologist about 2 years ago and got an ultrasound done on my chest, and everything looked ok
Surely nothing could develop in that period of time, right?

I guess I just want to know if I should go to the doctor and double check to make sure I'm alright

my daughter's cardio once told me that if a child is born with a healthy heart it'll stay that way until age and lifestyle choices cause otherwise. If you've had a complete check up and cleared I would not worry. At 17, it's more than highly unlikely.

Your pain could be anything from GERD, neck tension, pulled muscles in the chest, pulled muscle in the arm, etc. Unless your doc becomes concerned I wouldn't freak, and remember doctor's often order tests to rule out or for your peace of mind.

I would say you're A-OK  :action-smiley-065:

Ah, thank you! That definitely gives me peace of mind. c:

I try to eat healthy already [making my diet more vegetarian has also helped my digestive issues] and I'm improving my lifestyle so I hopefully won't have problems later in life, and then of course my anxiety comes along and asks "What if you're too late? What if you've made too many bad lifestyle decisions?" Considering I'm in my teenage years I don't really think there is a "too late", but it's always worst case scenario lol.

At 17, you probably have zero chance of having any heart problems.  I thought I was going to have a heart attack a few months ago.  I battled heartburn for a month before it finally went away.  My doctor said it's probably just from stress and anxiety is probably causing it.  I'm only 20 and you're not much younger than me, I wouldn't worry about anything even thought it's hard not to sometimes.
