Social stigma of anxiety and depression

I know that i have a problem and after spending some time reading on this site i am sure that it is anxiety. I have a concern about making this official with my doctor though. I feel that there is a social stigma about people with anxiety in this country. I feel like if am being treated for this that i will be looked down upon. I want to feel better but not at the cost of being able to live my life normally. Does anyone have any thoughts on this topic?

I had a nervous breakdown six months ago and still have the resultant anxiety, I told anyone that asked why I was off work, and it was surprising how many people had had a similar experience. It may be you don't want to make it official, I'm a police officer and I'm sure it will become a point somewhere in the future, but it is often helpful to let those around you know what's happening.
