Health Anxiety / Eye Twitch
« on: March 20, 2013, 08:32:08 AM »
So for the past week I have had a constant eye twich in my lower left lid. It is so annoying and really scary. you start to think maybe there is much more then just a twitch going on.

A Little background on me, I have lived with panic and anxiety for 14 years. I currently take a low dose Zoloft which helps so much. I do also have xanax as needed. I get a good nights sleep, I work out, I take vitamins, I have 3 kids so getting stressed is part of the job (hahaha) but I do suffer with health anxiety.  Not sure anything I do will ever totally get me over that hump.  Every little sensation scares me, then the radiation from the testing scares me. The "C" word is my biggest fear but everything bothers me. :sprachlos020:

So back to this eye twitch... its a new sensation and its scary as hell.  Most people get a twitch here and there then it goes away but a week???  COME ON! My eye doc said no biggie, my primary care said to call her in a month if its still happening.

Anyone else ever have these things that last this long?  Really concerning at times to just start out of the blue like that.

Thanks all!  :angel-smiley-006:

I've had an eye twitch last just as long, even a bit longer beccause I became so anxious over it. It happened like 3 years ago, and it scared me bad! So of course, because I was so scared it didn't let up. It was only when I loved on to fear another symptom, that I realized it finaly went away. Now when my eye occassionally twitches, I say "hmmm another anxiety symptom" and forget about it. Usually goes away in a few hours or a day. My grandma developed severe anxiety after my grandpa died last year, and she had an eye twitch that lasted 3 weeks! Her doctor also said it was "no biggie"...stress related for sure. Practice some progressive muscle relaxations (you can find a lot of info for it online and on YouTube)...that should help relax your muscles and hopefully the twitch will start to go away. Also, try and distract yourself with activities you actually enjoy doing, so the focus is on something positive rather than negative. Hope this helps some!

Yeah i had this not so long back actually. Mine lasted ages - at least a month. Spoke to my doctor about it and he said it's nothing - he did a quick eye exam but nothing more.
Turns out a few days later it just went all of a sudden and hasn't returned since. Have no idea what it was but obviosuly my doctor was right. He said the eyelid one is fairly common and they just seem to appear from nowhere and then go away for no reason.
I know this is rich coming from me but trust me, i had the exact same thing and like you was worried as i had it for so long but it literally just went away on it's own.

Hi!

Thought I'd share my experience, it might help. I started with some kind of nerve issue in my foot, I believe it to be nerve entrapment or tarsel tunnel now but at the time I was really really scared. A day after this started, I began with a twitch in my eye.  Oh, that caused health anxiety like you would not believe.  It twitched for two and a half months until it stopped a week and a bit ago now.

It is an extremely annoying and sometimes frightening condition, but I assure you it is not life threatening, and it is generalized anxiety.  I thought all kinds of things that just made me more ill.. it will go away eventually for you though. I recommend you take magnesium supplement, it will calm it down.

Regards

My eye doctor (a surgeon) said eye twitches are almost always caused by stress and unless your face is twitching at the same time, ignore it and it'll go away.  After he told me that, I paid attention to myself and realized I was scrunching up my forehead like a frown almost all the time.
