turns out I'm a special snowflake
« on: March 20, 2013, 03:25:24 AM »
So one of the things I had recently was a bout of thrush after taking antibiotics. It didn't clear up with treatment so my gynaecologist did some tests. Got the result today and it turns out it's a rare form of thrush that's resistant to treatment. My gynae didn't know what to treat it with so he's waiting to hear back from a specialist and said I might have to see a special infection specialist. I made the mistake of googling and it turns out the treatment is just as likely to kill you as the thrush :( so now I'm freaking out.

Thursh will not kill you. Even untreated, for like... ever. Not fatal.
Try probiotics!

I will endure any pain, as long as it has meaning.

sorry I meant the pill was just as likely to kill you as it was to kill the thrush, not that the thrush would kill me, I worded it badly.

I've been taking probiotics since I started taking the antibiotics.

The thrush I have is called candida glabrata it's a much rarer form than candida albicans the normal thrush and is resistant to most treatments.

Don't over think it.  The specialist will come up with the right decision to treat this 'special' form of thrush.  Ask the pertinent questions, like what are the side effects of the medication etc., but I'm sure everything will be fine.

I hope you're right green. I'm really worried about the medication and also worried that I'm going to be stuck with this and it won't clear up as it's resistant to treatment and that it'll turn into systemic candidiasis.

I knew someone who had an untreatable strain. I'm not sure if it was the same strain as yours(although it sounds familiar so it probably was), but she was able to control it with diet. Unfortunately she was a chef so it was tough as you have to taste what you cook, but don't give up hope.  It would flare at times and she had to manage it, but she was still a happy person living a normal life. So sorry you have to go through this!!  Hang in there and don't give up hope yet!
