Not sure what to do anymore
« on: March 17, 2013, 04:45:55 PM »
Hey,

ive been diagnosed with GAD for over a year now, and im completely out of hope. its ruining my life i feel like a completely diferent person. im uncapable of finishing my projects for school when i use to be a good student. i cant concentrate im constently afraid of failling and i have awfull pannick attacks before test where im shaking and i feel like my brain is fighting itself.  Ive tried 2 diferent type of medication that i eventualy stoped because they were worsening everything. Ive tried talking to my guidance consellor, a social worker, a physcyatrice. Nothing is helping ive tried breathing techniques, a anxiety work book they dont help. i just get more fustrated and stressed. I cant do anything anymore, ive had a full week off school and i dint do any of my projects or homework. would just sit in front of the computer then get fustrated and have a pannick attack that felt like no air could get to my lungs. Im scared. i would try anything to help my anxiety but im completely out of ideas. i need help ? :(

Hey there,

Don't lose hope, I know it's really frustrating at times. What helped me A LOT at University was something my doctor suggested. I told him I was having a horrible time with procrastinating and not wanting to even start papers or studying. He said "do you know why you do that?" and I said "no," he said "it's because you want to do it perfectly and so you can't even start, he said, "just go write that paper or start studying despite those fears and thoughts." I know it sounds  simple, but I would just go and do. I would sometimes tell myself, "I'm going to fail anyways, but I'm just going to go ahead and do this assignment anyway." Of course, I never failed and always did well but it got me through that procrastinations.

What also helped me was Lucinda Bassett's "Attacking Anxiety" program, it really is great!!

I'm going through a similar situation, with trying everything possble to get better, as well as struggling in my studies.
I too have tried therapy, self help books etc.
But the main thing to do is accept that you will never be the person you once were. Change is a natural process of life, no perspn ever stays the same, they change and grow throughout their life.
Think of your anxiety as a teacher. Because anxiety is such a rough struggle to go through, it teaches us to be grateful and appreciative of the smaller things in life, and the fact that you are doing all you can to help yourself, proves just how strong you are.
I know its the most difficult thng in the world to try and be positive and hopeful, when it feels like all we can do is give up, but hang in there, if you keep trying things will have to get better in time it may not be tomorrow, but recovery is a very gradual process, and the improvements we make are usually very small.
