Something is seriously wrong with me this time.
« on: March 17, 2013, 09:34:48 AM »
Hi everyone, going through a very tough time right now. I posted earlier in the week about a dry mouth and thirst. It hasn't gotten better, its only gotten worse.

I went to the er on wednesday? and they did a glucose test, everything came back fine and they sent me on my way. I'm still incredibly thirsty. I feel fatigued, I can't stop drinking water and I'm peeing every hour.

I'm worried about diabetes insipidus caused by maybe a brain tumor? or some other cause. Or maybe some sort of dysautonomia. I keep waking up in the middle of the night and I haven't had a decent sleep.

I'm 22 years old, I can't stop drinking water. INCREDIBLE THIRST. I have a doctors appointment tomorrow will hopefully get some blood and my urine checked. I don't know what the hell to do. I don't want to drink too much water in fear of water intoxication, its very easy for me to keep drinking. i have to stop myself or I could constantly drink.

I've obsessed and searched this board and other anxiety boards trying to find someone whos had similar symptoms, I've had a past with anxiety and hypochondria but this is different. Something is wrong and I'm worried. What do you guys think? does anyone have this thirst?

You are going to the doctor, so they will tell you if something is wrong. I can't think of anything but diabetes that causes that.

But you said something that EVERY single person on this board has said to themselves at one time or another - "I've had a past with anxiety and hypochondria but this is different. Something is wrong and I'm worried."

When is the last time someone showed up here and said "I told you I had a brain tumor and the doctors all said I was wrong"?

I get thirsty if I am nervous, am getting sick or eat spicy food. Your symptoms may be caused by one
of the preceding ones I mentioned.

Even being a seasoned veteran of anxiety and HA, I still have my moments - most recently before Christmas.  For about 2 months, I woke up feeling shaky and thirsty.  This was happening throughout the day.  I was drinking alot, so therefore, I was peeing alot.  I was pretty concerned about the shakiness/weakness.  I broke down and bought one of those blood glucose testers ..... I think I went through 2 containers in a month, I was testing myself so much.  Heck, my fingers were bruised from testing!  Of course, every single time, my blood sugar reading was well within normal range.  I actually ended up going to a doc for something else and had a blood test - of course it came back normal.

That being said, I was under some stress during this time - my anxiety was amped up.  So, do you think anxiety might have something to do with your symptoms?   :happy0151:

I don't quite understand the diabetes/brain tumor link. What does one have to do with the other?

Also, if they did a glucose test at the ER and it was fine, then it's not diabetes. The symptoms of diabetes come only after long periods of uncontrolled blood sugar, so your numbers would have been way off with the glucose test.

I agree with trainwreck. We hypos tend to be SO CONVINCED that THIS TIME is different. Well, statistically speaking, that's almost hardly ever the case.

I know when I get anxious, I drink a lot of water.....therefore frequent urination. On particularly anxious days, I've drank up to a gallon of water in 18 hours.

Last Autumn an optician suggested I might have sjogrens syndrome cause of my dry eyes - I googled and found that dry eyes and dry mouth can indeed mean sjogrens.  The very next day I was in agony with my eyes, like never before -  and my mouth and throat felt immensely dry.  This lasted about two weeks solid.  Then my bloods came back and I didn't have the syndrome and it all miraculously got better.
Having said that, I always tend to a dry throat at night and in the past three months this has got a lot worse at night and in day (tight throat too) and I am experiencing a lot of anxiety in my life at the moment.
So yes, in my experience anxiety can cause dry mouth/throat and it can go on as long as you worry about it/other things, I guess.

By the way, your signature, "I'm not on any medication, not seeing a therapist, and I hate life," is a surefire way to stay the way you are. Getting over an anxiety disorder takes actual effort, which oftentimes facilitates the need for a therapist and/or medication; and having a decent attitude about life is essential to recovery. Until you're willing to change some of these factors, I say good luck to you. Even if you are having blood sugar problems, the ER isn't going to be able to help you. You're just wasting their time, your time AND your money.

How did you get on at the ER?

Also I've found when I'm anxious I get a dry mouth and then if I become conscious of it it stays dry and I end up drinking all the time which of course makes you go to the loo more. It could just be because you are fixating on it that your mouth seems dry all the time.

The urination is most definitely from the drinking.

As for the dry mouth, I get this too sometimes... I can even bring it on JUST BY THINKING about it.  Which tells me that this is a symptom that is very easily made psychosomatic.  That's not to say that you don't need to be treated for anything, so I'm glad you're getting it looked at.  That said, I am confident that nothing serious is wrong.  Just that symptom in isolation does not sound bad.

ER went fine, the doctor talked some sense into me. Checked my electrolytes to see if I was drinking to much water or if I was dehydrated.... I was neither. The past week i've been physically making myself sick with worry.

As soon I let go of my fear of the dry mouth it went away and its not nearly as bad... crazy cause I was so sure it was more than anxiety and i was screwed for life.

I realize I need help and I saw my GP today, I asked to see a mental specialist. Thank you for all your words everyone. Much appreciated.

I really think I may have mitral valve regurgitation causing some of my symptoms... thing is, local doctor can't really hear anything with her stethoscope.. she could hear something loud enough during one visit to schedule me to get an echo... now she doesn't hear anything though...when I did get the echo 2 years ago I could hear what they heard and what I heard was a whooshing noise after the heartbeat in one particular area... they said it was nothing to worry about at the time.. I will press on the issue. I'm tired of them blaming everything on anxiety and prescribing meds.

Doctor didn't seem concerned that I have a bounding pulse (a strong heartbeat that I can feel that has gotten stronger the last few months.. not fast just strong)

I'm just throwing this out there, it might be far off but I have had some dry mouth recently.  Is there a possibility of using the heater in the winter months can dry the air out in your home causing this?
