constipated and worried...day 5 no bowel movement!
« on: March 17, 2013, 08:47:04 AM »
Over the past week and a half, I've been having problems with constipation.  I'm usually a pretty regular person, going once a day or every other day, always in the morning.  Starting about 10 days ago, I began getting constipated.  About 4 days passed, and I decided it had been too long, so I picked up a stimulant laxative.  It helped, and within hours I was able to go...but it quickly went the other way, and I developed diarrhea for a day and a half.  Now since then, nothing.  This is day 5 without a bowel movement.  I'm thinking about taking another laxative, because I know I need to go, but I don't really want to (I've heard of your system becoming dependent on laxatives, and I don't want that).  I keep having the urge to go to the bathroom, but when I go and try, nothing comes out.  I'm still passing gas no problem, so I know I'm not completely blocked up.  I know I don't eat right...I can't remember the last time I actually ate a helping of fruits or vegetables....I eat a lot of fried, greasy, foods and lots of sweets.  It's usually not a problem for me though.

Thoughts from anyone on what I should do??  It's worrying me a bit...thanks.

#1 Stop eating fried, greasy foods.

#2 Eat a salad every day and drink water

#3 Add Metamucil every day.

#4 Get more exercise every day

You do not have a serious problem.  You just need to make some lifestyle changes and you will be thrilled with the results very quickly.

Agreed. Perhaps until now, poor eating hasn't presented itself as a problem to you, where movements are concerned, but it's bound to at some point. Maybe this is that point. For regularity, and just for general health, I absolutely agree with the above two posts and get on track to eating well, and drinking plenty of water.

If you need a quick fix, a wonderful natural laxative (found this one out accidentally) are small pitted prunes. I actually love them, and made the mistake of eating a whole bag of them one day. Trust me, IT WORKS.

And yes, you absolutely can become dependant on laxatives. I have a friend who eats like you sound to, and she has gotten to the point where she taxes a laxative (prescription, shame on her doctor) every day, or she just can't go. It's been like that for years. Not good.

Best of luck! Let us know how it...er...comes out, so to speak? :)

Definitely don't start taking a laxative on a regular basis - there are so many other natural ways to alleve constipation, as noted in the above posts.

Diet does play an important part, but actually, getting up and moving around - any form of exercise is very important to keep your bowels regular.

Anxiety can wreak havoc on the digestive track, so it's important than when you're going through periods of higher stress to keep a good diet. Eat some fruits and veggies! Your body will thank you, not just for being able to pass a bowel movement, but for your health in general.

Coffee also helps, and so does exercise. I went for a jog the other day and boy did it clean me out.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

I agree with everyone above me saying water, a better diet and exercise.  I don't always eat the best but I've noticed when I drink a lot of water and exercise regularly I don't have as many stomach issues.

Don't take laxatives every day! They will make your colon rely on them, and you will develop melanosis coli. They are fine to take every once in a while. Instead, I would recommend you take miralax. Try it for 7 days, but no longer. Miralax is soluble fiber. Vegetables are insoluble fiber. Those are the 2 types of fiber. And don't eat bread. Bread clogs people up. If you must eat bread, eat one serving every other day. Instead, eat fish, chicken, eggs, cooked veggies, limited amounts of fruit, and nuts. (but if nuts and popcorn give you pain then don't eat them). Avoid wheat and brown rice, it is very hard to digest. Instead, use gluten-free grains or just regular white bread if you must have bread, but try to have bread without high-fructose corn syryp in it. Drink lots of water, no soda. No juice. If you must have juice, an 8 ounce serving should do good. Good diets you would probably benefit from would be the Paleo diet or FODMAP diet. Also, prune juice should help as well. Do you take high doses of vitamin D? That can cause constipation. But if you are deficient in D, then you should continue taking it. Just drink lots of water, and watch your sugar intake. Try not to eat more than >2g sugar per serving. Avoid vegetable oil and soy (basically in all processed foods... they are long chain fatty acids). Instead, go with extra virgin olive oil (it is medium chain fatty acid, gets absorbed through acid diffusion). Take a pro-biotic, one with lactobacillus and acidophilus in it. Have you had any abdominal surgeries in the past? They can cause adhesions. Adhesions can disrupt how the muscular and neuromuscular contractions work, causing more straining and constipation. So try the miralax for a week along with lots of water. Also, exercising will help, even if you can just go for a 15 minute walk or stretch and do breathing exercises that would help, too. Also, avoid dairy. Drink almond milk instead, as long as you are not allergic to almonds. Also, you could have cheddar or mozzarella if you really need cheese. All these things should help you, let me know if they work! good luck!!!

Thanks for the replies everyone!  And livelaughlove, to comment on your question...yes I have had abdominal surgeries.  I had a c-section 18 months ago, and a complication that caused an infection, resulting in a second surgery to the same area within 2 weeks!  Yesterday I did a lot of walking, and ate some veggies and figs, and drank lots of water...but today I felt like I needed to go, and only was able to pass a small, hard pebble-looking bowel movement.  Sorry for the TMI, but I don't think I can really count this as having a bowel movement.  This is day 6, I'm just not sure how long I should go on without taking something to clean myself out completely.  I'm just worried about getting an obstruction there.

Everyone has said very useful things.  I will add COFFEE to that list, if you like it.

Additionally, I know it's hard, but sometimes just throwing your hands up and saying "screw it, I'm not gonna worry about it" is just about all you need to get going again.

I've been through bouts of constipation - I wouldn't not go at all, but much less than normal.  For like two-three weeks.  then i return to normal after that.  Just nature, I guess.

I have to throw in a sidebar here .... just for laughs and to put it into perspective.

For years - decades even, I was a once or twice a weeker .... seriously.  Many times, once a week.  I had a pretty decent diet .....

I started eating a high fiber cereal and started having a BM daily, sometimes twice daily and I started freaking out, thinking something was wrong. *sigh*

I guess you can't have it both ways, huh? LOL!

I have to take 3(yes THREE) iron pills a day. So you can just imagine how constipating that can make you. I take two tablespoons of blackstrap molasses every night.I go every morning with no problems. Or, you could try taking magnesium. Or, many GI Dr's recommend Miiralax. It is safe for daily use.

Drink lots of water. Drink coffee. Eat onions(raw on salads or sandwiches). Drink prune juice.

Do not use laxatives every day.

Have you seen a gastroenterologist? I work for gastro, and i notice people that have had abdominal surgeries usually suffer from constipation, because they get adhesions. Adhesions are basically after your surgery, they develop scar tissue as they heal, but it makes everything in the abdominal area kind of stick together, so then you are pushing to have a bowel movement but nothing comes out. I think another surgery to correct that would be lysis of adhesions, to cut the "stickyness" so then you can freely go to the bathroom again. Probably what would clean you out would be like a colonoscopy prep. Do a low residue breakfast, stay on clears, then in the afternoon take 2 dulcolax tablets, then 2 hours later, for a prep, they would drink 64 ounces of gatorade with one of those little small bottles of miralax. You could maybe take 2 dulcolax tabs, then 2 hours later, drink some miralax with maybe say 32 ounces of gatorade, that would definitely clean you out. About an hour after you do that, you would go to the bathroom and be cleaned out. Or, instead of drinking all that, you could do an enema, that would get you going. Once you are cleaned out, the next day resume your normal diet and slowly work your way up (over a 2 week period) of taking up to around 20 grams of fiber a day. But ask your doctor about this, because some people can't have fiber like that, or they can only do soluble fiber and not insoluble fiber, like people with inflammatory bowel (crohn's and UC). I notice a lot of women after having had cesarean sections have constipation all the time. Also, get your thyroid checked (if you have hypothyroidism that can cause constipation). When my daughter was little, around 4 years old, she would suffer from constipation. And it was always after she ate those annisette pizzelle cookies. I had to give her an enema, nothing happened, then i had to administer another enema, and she finally pooped, and it was like the size of a round baseball. I felt so bad! We were in the hospital for 2 days with that one. So i no longer let her eat those cookies. Also, she does better since i switched to organic gummy vitamins instead of the regular flintstone vitamins, i think she just couldn't digest them properly. She does best by avoiding wheat and not much sugars. She goes once a day now. I try to cook healthy and avoid processed foods, and no high fructose corn sugar. And i don't give her anything with anise in it, that definitely makes her constipated. I only use extra virgin olive oil and butter and i avoid soy, vegetable oil, and margarine. That really helps. Especially watching sugars really helps, too. But in your case, i would say first you need to get cleaned out, so try doing an enema. Once you are cleaned out, do a healthy organic diet. I can't eat wheat, it gives me bad stomach pains and bloating. I do best by staying on a low-carb, high protein diet. I am the opposite, i go to the bathroom too much every day. I get flares where sometimes i can go to the bathroom up to 10 times a day. They actually thought i had celiac disease. I had an EGD and my small bowel looked like a celiac patient, but i don't carry the genes that celiac people have. So i got no advice, but i do do better avoiding gluten as much as possible. Right now i am waiting for my test results from my stool culture to come back, they think i have a digestion problem with my pancreas, where it is hyperactive and producing too many digestive enzymes. That's probably why food goes right through me sometimes. Whoever thought our bowels would be ruling our lives like this? lol... but seriously you should call your doctor and ask his/her advice on what to do to make you feel better!
