Bumped my head on the roof of the car...
« on: March 17, 2013, 06:12:39 AM »
Hey guys. I’ve been dealing well with my HA but you know how it is, sometimes the tiniest things triggers you and you come back looking for support :P

So today I bumped my head on the roof of a car when sitting at the back in a very cramped position, it was not very painful upon contact, but because the bump on the road was quite big and the space was very cramped, I felt when my head bumped the roof, it had nowhere to go so had to be pressed upwards, and hence my neck is pressed towards the roof as well, if that makes sense. This has me worried - not so much about head injury but neck injury, from the result of being squashed towards the car ceiling at an uncontrolled speed. (though my head was very close to the car roof, probably less than 10cm, which is why my neck had to be pushed upwards when I hit the bump, nowhere else to go!)

No loss of consciousness or discernible pain afterwards, either in head or around neck, though I was very panicked thinking I might have injured my head/neck. I've had some abdominal discomfort later and felt slightly dizzy but that can easily be caused by carsickness (I was travelling on a mountainous terrain so lots of twists and turns).

No headache or tender spots on the head or around the neck, the neck doesn't hurt when I move around but I do feel some sort of tension like the onset of a tension headache, but not quite pain. On the journey back I felt really sleepy and nodded off for a bit, but I didn't feel I slept or anything, woke myself up as soon as there were movement around me.

Mainly I've had palpitations and my heart raced like crazy for a couple of hours on and off, with many waves of anxiety attacks because I could not be certain whether I've caused any injury or not. Of course shaken and rationally I know all the discomfort comes from anxiety but you guys know how it is - once you start to worry everything attributes towards  it.

So - do you think I need to worry, about either the head or neck? Has anyone had a similar experience when their head is knocked towards something and then their neck was impacted too? It's been 6/7 hours, no pain but some tension. I just feels very shaken -like everything's not so real and you are slow, and people have noticed that I look a bit dazed. Is this normal? Has anyone experienced something like this? it'd really help! Thanks, you guys are great :)

Everything sounds perfect to me. Most of what you descibe sounds like normal anxiety symptoms. It appears you got off without doing any serious damage at all. The only thing that might occur is a bit of stiffness. ( If you did crank the neck ) But that should pass by itself. It is not something I would really worry about based on what you have written up. Just monitor yourself over the next few hours. I am sure you will be able to tell if any real damage was done. But it doesn't sound like it at all. Sounds more normal anxiety symptoms to me.

Our skulls are designed to protect our brains from stuff like that.  I hit my head on something at least once a day (I'm not what you'd call the most coordinated person ever...usually I hit a wall in my sleep  :laugh3: ) and it hasn't done me any harm.
