Sternum pain after Panic attacks
« on: March 16, 2013, 11:03:35 PM »
As the subject states, I've been getting sever pain in my sternum after having panic attacks. It feels like a sharp stabbing pain and when I move certain ways it makes a cracking noise, which is also very painful. Unfortunately, I tend to have multiple panic attacks a day, as my anxiety is quite bad.
When I tried to describe this to someone else they said they think it's heartburn, but I know it isn't because it only happens after panic attacks and heartburn never makes my sternum have a cracking noise when I move.

Does anyone else get this? What should I do about it?

I just think it is all part of the after effects of a panic attack. When we panic we tense up. Once it is over with we relax a bit. It is common to get pains here and there. I do have many bones that like to go ' pop ' at times. One or two can hurt when they do pop. I don't think there is any miracle cure for this at all. Just comes with the turf as such. One of those things we have to live with.

Hi there...I have a similar issue. Right over the center of my chest  it gets really sore. Especially on high anxiety days, it can be constantly painful. I've read that this can be related to tense muscles in your back. They said to put a couple of tennis balls in a sock, and try laying on top of them so that they are on either side of your spine. Then roll back and forth on them. Or, go get a massage. :)

What also helps for me is concentrating on relaxing the chest wall muscles. Sometimes, if I do it right, I can literally feel the tension melt away. Drop and relax your shoulders, then sit up straight and pull them back, rather than hunching over like you probably normally do. Breathe with your abdomen and not your chest.

I know this takes a lot of concentration but I'm hoping it will be second nature with practice!
