Does anyone have PVCs ("skipped" beats) and know whether...
« on: March 13, 2013, 07:00:06 PM »
Does anyone know whether PVCs can flare up due to illness?

Those of us who get PVCs know what they're like, so I don't have to explain.  For me, they can get worse due to:  Not drinking enough, consuming too much sodium, probably also due to not getting enough sleep, and maybe also due to being stressed-out in general.

But most of the time I'm not bothered by them; they just flare up now and then, and it's usually diet/fatigue related.

Recently I was sick (cold/flu, but it was pretty bad with fever for a few days) and especially while recovering from this I had PVCs nearly constantly if sitting up, but while lying down resting they would go away.  I'm better now and have not had the PVCs at all.  But for a few days it was like I had to lie down or they would be very frequent.  I was not on any meds except an occasional ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

Anyone know if this is what caused it? (viral illness).  You don't think it was some awful heart inflammation or anything, right?  If it since went away, I have nothing to worry about, right? (My heart was checked thoroughly by a cardiologist 5 yrs ago and found to be great.)  Will illness do that, just from the body being overtaxed or something?

I helped two or three people with their issues just now, so I hope someone helps me with this one.

I was diagnosed with PVC's a few years back. I had every test in the book, and my heart was found to be healthy. Last week, I went in to the ob/gyn for an annual check-up. I was VERY stressed at the time. The Dr. started to panic and said my heart rate was 16 bpm and irregular. I assured her it was stress-induced (heart problems are not one of my HA fears, so I didn't freak out). Anyway, I find that dehydration and anxiety really trigger my PVC's, but my cardiologist said they are not dangerous.

I appreciate that one answer, but I thought people were always talking about heart issues here.  No one else has any input for me on this?

Also, for what it's worth, my cardiologist told me "No one's heart is a Swiss watch. They all have their quirks." As HA'ers, we're probably just more aware of our quirks.

PVC's can absolutely be causes by a viral illness. They can also be caused by anxiety or absolutely nothing at all. PVCs themselves are a completely benign condition. They do no harm and have no sinister cause. They are natural. There is just a tiny little glitch in the system so the ventricle beats before the SA node fires. Absolutely everyone has a PVC from time to time... Most probably have them daily, but they also my even notice. Rest assured you are fine.

Also, if you had inflammation of the heart you would have a heck of a lot more going on than just some PVCs

My doctor told me that PVC's with no underlying heart issues are benign.

When I'm sick with a cold I seem to have more PVC's than I normally do. I think its pretty normal, although I do over think it sometimes and think I may have something worse.  :winking0008:
