anyone on meds drink tea in the morning to get moving?
« on: March 13, 2013, 03:16:51 PM »
So its been since mid Jan I've been on meds, lexapro from 10 to 15 for the last four or five weeks, klonopin 1mg, half at night, .25 on waking and .25 around 4 in the afternoon, and for about a week 1.25 (half of the 2.5 mg pill so may vary slightly) of olanzapine (generic zyprexa) presumably to boost the lexapro.  I am usually sleeping better, but still tired in the morning (though less anxious), and even when I get up early I usually end up napping sometime around midmorning.  I should add that I am really afraid of the olanzapine after reading about it so I am keeping the dose low till I can go off it, it does seem to help sleep and possibly anxiety but I can't rule out that the lexapro might finally be helping with the anxiety and mood by now (it was making it worse before).
In the past, when I am totally better, I have been able to drink tea to wake up in the morning.  I am not there yet, but probably sooner rather than later I will need to return to my job which requires interacting with lots of people and it starts early in the day.  So how many other anxious/depressed folks out there are able to have a cup of tea without consequence in the morning, or do you have a better alternative?

Hello-- I actually drink green tea with no problem what so ever. I know everyone is different, but I personally don't have any issues with tea. Maybe try a couple of sips at first and wait a bit just to make sure it dosen't spark any anxiety from the caffeine. Just a thought..

be careful with any black teas until you are stabilized with your medications- they have the most caffeine I believe.

Thanks, I tried some green tea this morning, didnt affect me (I still was sleepy midmorning).  I will be cautious with tea as I hopefully continue to improve.

I had the same problem with caffeine. I started drinking decaf coffee. It satisfied my morning coffee craving, placebo-effected me into thinking that I felt more awake, and didn't make me anxious!  Win win win!

I am VERY sensitive to caffeine.  When I am at my most anxious I drink only decaffeinated teas.  (I won't go near coffee, even decaffeinated.)  When my anxiety abates I will dare to drink regular tea, both black and green, but I usually take two teabags; one regular and one decaffeinated and brew them in a quart of water and nurse them along all day.  That way the caffeine does not kick-in all at once.
