Help, I feel cold
« on: March 12, 2013, 06:02:24 AM »
Today the weather is pretty cold here, I woke up this morning everything was fine. But after a couple of hours I feel cold, very cold, yes the weather is cold but it is only me who feel it very cold and make me a little bit shiver. It's been 6 hours and no matter what I do, it seems the cold wont get away, I still shiver. Hot shower, put on sweater, pile of blanket, etc. I check my body temperature it is normal, everything seems normal, my doctor said that it is only my feeling but I can't make it go away it's like my body suddenly become to sensitive with cold. Does anyone have the same experience? What happen to me? Please help.

Hi,

Sorry to hear about the cold as I often am in that condition but there is a physical cause . . . I am now underactive and I often feel cold even in summer time when my thyroid is misbehaving . . . for me, it's not a type of cold that responds to more clothes, etc. It is an inner cold . . . in any case, if your doctor says that you are physically fine, ask him/her if s/he has checked your thyroid. Even though thyroid is more usually associated with women, men can also develop thyroid issues (I have two male friends with thryoid conditions that are managed quite effectively through medication as is mine most of the time). Your doctor may be reluctant to test you for thyroid, but it is a possibility. The other issue is whether this cold feeling is just this one time or if there is a pattern and if there is a pattern, then something must be triggering it if it is not a physical problem and perhaps working with a counselor might help you. If this is just this one time, perhaps you are fighting off a virus . . . .have you ever had low blood sugars???? What you might consider doing is answering these questions for yourself and then deciding on the best course of action . . . your body is telling you something and even if it is only your feeling, then it might be something bothering you that you have yet to acknowledge . . . let us know how things go for you, ok? Take care, kc

Hello,

Here's a piece of the puzzle . . .I spoke with a friend who is a retired nurse . . . she tells me that being cold as you described is not necessarily a symptom on which to based a diagnosis of anxiety but many people with anxiety do suffer from the type of cold that you describe. Her recommendation is to contact your doctor because feeling cold could be symptomatic of other issues such as thyroid . . . in addition, she said that we may learn the symptom . . .for example: if you felt cold during an anxiety episode, then you may learn that when you are having an anxiety episode, you should feel cold and you do . . . .it is very real to you . . .bottomline: check it out . . . it it's something like thyroid, meds can help; if it is an anxiety issue, counseling can help you to understand the triggers and manage the symptoms . . .check in with us when you can . . .take care, kc

Thank you for your reply, really need that.

I'm 37 years old and have 3 years old son, I lost my job in November 2012 and after that series of anxiety attack hit me again. In February 2013 I got a new job, same one but in different institution, but the salary is way lower than the last institution where I work before. I thought after I got a new one this series of anxiety is gone, but it doesn't. For the past 3 month I got diarrhea, IBS, panic attack, lost weight, and everything related to anxiety, and now this cold feeling. This cold had hit me twice, last week and the other is last night. Before that I also experiences the same cold feeling but not like this, before I lost my job when this cold feeling happen I only need to take a hot shower, or wrap my body with blanket for 5 to 10 minutes and the cold feeling are gone, but this week it's different.

Last night I try to sleep but I couldn't because of this cold, then I decide to take the medication from my psychiatrist, it's an anti depression and after that I can sleep and wake up this morning and the cold is gone. I feel fine now, there are no bad thought in my head, I feel happy, it is a bit cold outside but I feel fine. Same with the last week cold feeling, I took the anti depression pill and the cold feeling is gone and the next day I woke up with a better mood.

I plan to see a doctor today and ask him to check my thyroid. Thank you for your help.
