Trying not to Google A Medical Question....Please help!!!!
« on: March 10, 2013, 11:02:43 AM »
It seems I cant get my heart rate down......it stays at around 90 per minute.  I'm not really having anxiety over anything, but my heart is beating so fast and won't drop even after sitting a while.  Is this normal??

Thank you!!!

When my heart rate goes up like that, I try to slow my breathing and take slow, even, deeper breaths. This usually does the trick. Sometimes I'll have to actually do some sort of physical activity to get my heartrate down (takes my mind off of it, therefore lowering it). Yes....this is very common with anxiety. The more you think about it, the worse it will get.

A quick trick to get your heart rate down is to repeatedly splash cold water over your face for a minute. Also wet your neck and arms. This will produce the Mammalian Dive Reflex which slows the heart as the brain thinks the body is cooling down like when you dive into cold water and it slows down the heart to preserve body heat

The heart tends to do wonky things when you pay undue attention to it. So you sitting there worrying that your heart won't go below 90bpm is actually helping it stay that high.

jwall's got some good suggestions there. Do something to get your mind off it, and stop monitoring yourself!

In case anyone is still confused:  googling your symptoms will cause you to remain in a state of extreme anxiety. Stepping away from the internet is the first step toward lasting peace.

According to the Mayo Clinic:

A normal resting heart rate for adults ranges from 60 to 100 beats a minute.

Keep in mind that many factors can influence heart rate, including:
Activity level
Fitness level
Air temperature
Body position (standing up or lying down, for example)
Emotions
Body size
Medications

Normal for me is 80's but anxiety or stress kicks it up to 90's - 100's. Even if I'm resting at work sitting up but if I'm working on something that has a deadline my heart rate will go up.

Your resting heart rate is within normal limits, as Vanilla said it can be anywhere from 60 to 100 bpm. Also if you concentrate on your heart rate you will keep it higher especially if you're worrying about it.

The best help for this issue is to stop checking your heart rate. I promise. I have been "clean" since the first of thy year. It makes a world of difference.
