School
« on: March 09, 2013, 12:30:23 PM »
School is one of my big triggers. I always feel that because of my anxiety that I wont be able to have a career because my anxiety takes up a lot of free space in my head. I had to drop out this semester because school was causing me a lot of issues and I did not want to get dropped anyways so  I got the drop with the refund. My anxiety has gotten worst the last few months and I really don't like it. Its making me not want to do the things I used to l love to do.

Hi Marisa,

Well, school can be anxiety provoking without a doubt. Have you had positive or negative experiences at school? Are you concerned that you won't achieve at the level that you want to achieve? Are you concerned about disappointing someone or of failing? The reason I ask these types of questions is that I used to be a university teacher and often if I could help a student figure out the why behind his/her concerns, then together we usually could come up with a plan to help the student resolve the obstacles. In some cases, the student would need professional help in resolving deeply rooted triggers, but in all cases the students with whom I worked all came back to school and went on to successful careers and very happy lives. If your anxiety has increased in the last few months, you might consider working with a therapist to figure out why and then coming up with a management plan. It is better to do something and be proactive in your recovery, than do nothing and hope that it (the anxiety) will go away. Marisa, do not fear that you won't have a career. All this is is a a speed bump . . . you can overcome it with some help and, as always, come here and let us know how we can support you if it is just listening . . . .you are not the only person who has had these feelings or this experience and you are not the only person who feels that they had to stop doing stuff that they enjoyed, but you are the only person who matters right now to you and your recovery is the most important career choice you can make right now . . .stay in touch, okay? Take care, kc

I know exactly how you feel! I'm taking 14 hours this semester and my anxiety had kicked in big time. I'm terrified of failing or not doing well or something happening to make me have to drop out of school and ruin my chances of ever having a career. I'm going to therapy now and it's helping. I just try to do my best and maintain my GPA but I def. know how you feel. My anxiety popped up as soon as this semester started and it's been one of the worst episodes I've experienced yet. I'm working on getting it under control and started taking celexa. It's been better like I said but I can't stand feeling anxious about life all the time!
