Broke my same finger the third time.
« on: March 08, 2013, 06:53:57 PM »
So I've broken my middle finger on my left hand 3 times in the last 6 years, all times while I was playing sport. Does anyone know why? It properly healed the other 2 times, do you think it will this time? Thanks.

Hi Scaredandworried,

I know someone who has broken their smallest toe on their left foot four times. He always breaks it doing the same thing (martial arts sweeping techniques). So, that's my first thought--if you leave your finger in the wrong place and hit a volley ball with it (or something similar) and you keep breaking it, then you probably need to change your technique a little!

On the other hand, in many cases, when a break happens the bone does not grow 100% exactly like it was before the break... at least not for many years. I'm an osteologist, I've looked at a *lot* of people's bones. I would not be surprised if you assume your break is healed before it truly is.

That guy I know with the perpetually broken little toe? He jokes he's going to cut it off and says: "meh, I've got nine others!" Oh, to be someone without HA.

You might have to be a little extra careful of that finger for longer than you think is all.
