so! I'm back :( ovarian cancer
« on: March 08, 2013, 04:46:19 PM »
Hey everyone!

So I've been gone 6 months, I was doing very well! But as is the case with most of us its hit me again, hard!! Have been having lots of pain in my right side where my ovariys are, sometimes its sharp stabbing pain and sometimes a dull ache for most of the day for a few months didn't reali think much of it at first thought maybe I'd pulled a mussle or something, but now its painfull if I'm just laying there, spoke to my doctor yesterday and he is sending me to have and internal ultrasound but won't get the app for around 4-6 weeks :( just wanted to know if anyone has had this? Maybe help to calm me down a little? Had a pap test down last month and everything was normal, thanks for reading and hope to hear from anyone soon xxx

I'm so sorry! I'm struggling with this fear too. I went to my ob/gyn last week and told her my fears and that I have a family history of ovarian cancer. She did my exam and told me everything felt normal and that she didn't think I need an ultrasound. I'm freaking out because I know a manual exam usually doesn't detect it. I'm having a hard time trusting her. I'm glad you're at least getting the ultrasound, but I know waiting is hard. If it's any consolation my cousin did have ovarian cancer and is 5 years cancer-free, so it's not the death sentence it used to be. hang in there!

Hi Gals, I have had some experience with this, as a lot of ladies on the board here have, so hopefully they will chime in too.

A benign and totally normal ovarian cyst can cause all the symptoms you are talking about. I had the same thing a few years back. My GYN felt that one ovary was a bit enlarged and sent me for an ultrasound. She told me from the beginning that she didn't feel that it was anything serious, that she just wanted it looked at. By the time I had it done, the one they were looking for was gone, and had one on the other ovary.  Actually, cysts form every month on the ovaries at ovulation, most of the time, though, they don't grow and disappear so we don't know they are there.
As for the Dr. checking and not thinking you need an ultrasound, GYNs are very experienced in this, enough so that they know if anything about the ovary feels different and what it may mean. A totally normal feeling ovary wouldn't be possibly cancerous and that is what he/she is going by. So, take your Dr's word!
