Need info on EMDR
« on: March 06, 2013, 09:55:18 PM »
I've been seriously looking into starting EMDR.  I don't understand it that well, but one thing I read was that you needed to trust the therapist your working with.  I don't trust anyone!  Will my negative self talk steer me another way?  Do I have to "believe" this will work?  Do you have any personnal experiences w/it that could help enlighten me.  Thanks for your help!

With any kind of theraphy you have to believe it will work. If you don't there is no point to the theraphy at all. I have spoken to people who went to theraphy and said ' That was rubbish '. They didn't believe it would work before they went. So once there they were not really getting into the whole idea of what the theraphy had to offer. EMDR is meant to be great for PTSD. Never done it myself. Seems a rather simple form of theraphy. But it would be pointless going if you thought it was never going to work for you. I always go with an open mind. I have used exposure theraphy. Facing up to my worst fears. I trusted in the therapist. Once I done that I found I got results. Have a long think about things in advance of going. Even talk to the therapist. Tell them how you feel about such things. They might offer you some words that may change your mind.

I did EMDR, and it had a profound impact on me. But I approached it very slowly, and I really trusted my therapist. And I only really did it one time; it was that impactful. I went through one situation that had triggered the PTSD. So ... it didn't heal me, I still deal with hyper-vigilance in physical symptoms, but I generally know what to do with that. But I felt a profound sense of grounding after, and a sense of connection. I dunno, alot less like a victim. It was immediate and noticeable right away to me and my family. But this was after years of suffering. So ... it was one tool in the tool belt so to speak. But it was profound for me.
