Trileptal
« on: March 05, 2013, 08:03:14 AM »
Anyone here with experience of using Trileptal (oxcarbazepine) for anxiety and depression? I'm taking clonazepam 2mg now along with other antidepressants. Was thinking if Trileptal could replace clonazepam and also gain som antidepressive effects.

Oxcarbazepine is an anticonvulsant with mood stabilizing properties, not an antidepressant. It works by inhibiting positively charged sodium ion influx into neurons reducing their ability to 'fire.' Benzodiazepines achieve the same result by increasing the influx of negatively charged chlorine ions into cells.  However, the anticonvulsants are very hit and miss in controlling anxiety. Some seem to do okay, but a lot derive no benefit.

Also be aware that oxcarbazepine can affect sodium, folic acid and vitamin D levels, so regular blood testing should be done. It also reduces the effectiveness of oral contraceptives.
