Social Media Freak Out
« on: March 04, 2013, 03:43:08 PM »
Why is it that every other post on 0457, news sites, etc talk about disease or I was just diagnosed with cancer, etc. I am freaking out because I saw a post about someone my age (late 30s) being hit with cancer. I don't know what kind, etc just that she is my age and has cancer. I start fearing for myself all over again. I hate that!

I realize this is a total OCD thought, but coupled with the other symptoms I have it worries me so much.

You always see stuff like that because you are somewhat connected to sooooooo many people. If you have 500 friends and they have 500 friends (And that is low for 0457) then you have a connection to............ Someone do the math for me!  250,000 people?

Great point! The post I saw this on has 67,000+ likes so that puts it in great perspective. I just get tired of worrying about colon cancer and lymphoma. Trying to not let the what ifs creep in.

I absolutely hate those posts, as soon as I see one I feel like crap; crap for the person who is living it and crap for me who is about to worry about it.  I seriously considered deleting my 0457 because of it. Also re-tweets for the same sort of stuff.....no need!! lol

It's not just social media either. I was working from home today and had the radio on, there were THREE cancer awareness adverts on in the space of 20 minutes, I mean WTF!

This is me, exactly! I hate it for the person and for myself. I just start visualizing how horrible and devastating it must feel and then think about my fears, etc. You are right. It is everywhere. I need to learn how to filter those things, and not make them internal.

Some advice a therapist once gave me was to not watch the news in the morning.  She said it only reported bad things, and why start your day like that.  Of course I will probably miss the Zombie Apocolypse and get eaten, but it's a chance I will take.

Couldn't agree more:) Our mornings are vital for us to get in the best frame of mind possible as we get ready to 'face another day' (we feel) interracting with our mental health challenges. We wake up and, often, immediately begin our process of wondering what today will 'bring us'? If at all possible, some time in the morning needs to be dedicated to some anti-anxiety actions and habits....can't we give ourselves 10-15 mins?:)

Of course I will probably miss the Zombie Apocolypse and get eaten, but it's a chance I will take.

Hey, if they are coming, I'd rather spend my last day not knowing til the last minute anyway. An anxious mind would be 'what-ifing?' too much anyway......, "What if they try to eat me but don't really like how I taste?", "They seemed to love my neighbor...what maybe wrong with me?!":):):)

Peace and Feel Well:)

Something to remember - you might see one post about someone having cancer - what about all the other posts during the day you see from people who don't have cancer? You don't have to be the 'one', you can always be one of the many!

I think of it like planes. How many planes take off a day? Sure one might crash every now and then, but it doesn't HAVE to be the one you're on.

This is an excellent point! Thank you for turning that around! Such a great thing to remember! Reminding myself of that right now.

In the old days, when we had five channels on the television, a phone with a cord that hung from the wall, and the newspaper, we rarely heard about dreaded diseases. If you wanted to research symptoms of an illness you had to go to the library. I think technology can be really great, but sometimes less of it makes life easier. Just my opinion.

It sure makes it easier to self-diagnose and make oneself miserable!   :dazed:

We were not so inclined to self-diagnose nor make ourself miserable with a myriad of illnesses. Nor did we have to look to others to know what we like or don't like or whom we like or prefer to avoid, however that is announced.

It was a simpler world where the phone stayed in one place, at home, and we survived anyway. When we were with others we paid attention to them and not the object in our hands. When we went outdoors we could be with ourself and with nature. We could be silent. And the library was and remains a great joy.

This is exactly what I was getting on here to post about this morning. My morning routine is to check my cell phone while still in bed. I check my email, bookface, etc. This morning, within 3 minutes of waking up, I read posts about a little boy who was celebrating a 1 year liver transplant "birthday" (which seems like a joyous occasion, but just gets my mind spinning), another little boy who died of heart problems and they posted a picture of the mom kissing the hand of the terribly sick looking child, literally on his death bed, and another little boy, who is going through all kinds of health issues and has no answers. Also posts about Cystic Fibrosis and other things. I mean...I can appreciate that social media gives those with illnesses or facing trials an outlet and a voice. I think it is great that people who need organs can "advertise" on these sites, and I believe lives are probably sometimes saved because of it. But for someone who is...saying is slowly...recovering...from health anxiety, this just makes my brain go a million miles a minute. I am considering deleting my bookface account but it is just so depressing anymore.
