Unexplained Dramatic Weight Loss
« on: March 03, 2013, 09:19:27 PM »
I've had issues with anxiety for as long as I can remember (I'm 28), but I'm having the worst bout of health anxiety I've ever had right now. For well over a year, I've had some weird unexplained symptoms (hives, constant urination, pain in lower back, dizziness, excessive sweating, heat palpitations, diarrhea) and a number of tests to figure out what's going wrong. In the past 8 months or so, I've had a chest, abdomen, and pelvis CT scan, a chest xray, a pelvic ultrasound, an upper endoscopy, and lots of blood tests. Nothing wrong has showed up in any of these.

About two months ago, I started on very low-dose Synthroid for hypothyroidism--at 25 mcg, which is so low of a dose that it doesn't do much for many people. But in the past two weeks, I have begun dropping weight like crazy. Probably about 7 or 8 pounds--can't tell for sure because my scale is broken. It's freaking me out, and while I don't know for sure that it isn't the meds, my doctor told me via email that it would be very unlikely for such a low dose to cause these symptoms, though everyone is different. The thing is--I've had so much trouble losing weight my whole life, and while I've had anxiety attacks in the past, nothing would cause me to lose weight like this. Nothing. I know my body, and I know this isn't right.

Am I panicking over nothing? I'm so scared I can barely function right now. Note: my CT scan was about six months ago at this point.

Hi, you sound very anxious. Very anxious people usually don't have a good appetite and are not eating well (if eating at all). i had some complications after tooth extraction in winter, couldn't eat normally for a couple of weeks. It was more than enough to loose weight dramatically, my clothes were too big for me. In 2 weeks! Are youneating normally? Perhaps it could explain your weight loss.

Well, you've had a ton of tests. If something sinister was going on it would have shown up. How do you know you have lost that much weight if you haven't weighed yourself? Have you been eating enough? At some point you need to start dealing with the anxiety.  You seem to have exhausted the medical part of things. Your symptoms scream anxiety issues. Has your doctor considered the anxiety aspect of things?
