So scared everyday... Help please?
« on: March 03, 2013, 02:57:33 PM »
hi, I'm a girl and 15 years old. My anxiety happened/was diagnosed in early November. I've always been scared of getting fevers, they just always scared me.  Well now, my ocd has taken over that fear and I have to carry a thermometer around school because I'm afraid that I have one. And after I check it, I feel like I have to take it again. This makes me scared that even if it is 98.9 I will freak out and cry because I like it to be below 98.6. I'm scared to go away on vacation because of the fear of fevers and what if thinking. I'm scared because everyday I wake up in terror of what JFK get a fever today. I go to a physiologist but the only thing she said to do is hide the thermometers. I was able to get over It once when it was never this bad, but now it's back and worse than ever. I just feel hopeless and scared of doing anything. I'm thinking of trying that grid technique, but can I have your thoughts on my problem? I just wish I could go back to normal. I feel like a scared little girl.

p.s. im really sorry but i accidentally put this in the ocd section as well but this is the right category:) any answers or some other people with the same things and ways to overcome them

I did respond to your previous post. According to my doctor, your temperature can go up and
down in a 24 hour period. He said it is typically lowest in the morning and highest in the evening.
It also can vary depending on an medication you take, your stress level, your environment and the
list goes on.

Hi, I'm sorry that you're having such a hard time with this fear. It sounds as though you've got into a cycle of needing constant reassurance which all of is here can relate to. The problem is that the reassurance only lasts a very short time before we need to seek it again. If you don't get the reassurance of taking your temperature, I bet you feel very uncomfortable and worried, but ultimately you have to go through that feeling and try to accept it until the urge to check your temperature gets less. I don't think this is something you should be trying to deal with yourself. It's all very well your psychologist telling you to hide the thermometers, but a fear like this is very powerful and tough to just break. Maybe you could start by increasing the time between allowing yourself to check, so that at first you let yourself check every hour for example, then gradually less and less over a few weeks. Also see if you can get some counselling or CBT to help you if you haven't already. You need to look at why you are so scared of fevers and what they mean to you that is so frighteninh, then maybe you can also work on rationalizing your gears.
