Is it possible to get Meningitis this way?
« on: March 03, 2013, 06:31:21 AM »
Hi, new user here.
Lately I've read alot about Meningitis and being the hypochondriac that I am, I'm starting to think I've actually got it...
I got really paranoid after something that happened yesterday. My nose was runny and I accidentally got some mucus on a tiny cut/wound on my hand when wiping and I felt it sting. Of course, I washed my hands thoroughly and cleaned the wound. I've heard that alot of young people have the meningitis bacteria in their throat and nose (I'm 17). So I'm wondering if I could possibly have given myself Meningitis if the mucus from my nose came in contact with the cut on my hand (blood)?? I feel fine but I'm still scared...

unlikely.  if that would happen then most of us would have menigitis.

do you see your pediatrician annually?   well did you know that if you do and are up to date on your shots, then it is unlikely this could happen.   my 12yr old had her menactra shot a couple of weeks ago.  then my 18yr old son had the booster two days later....  so, provided, you are up to date with your vaccines (and if you are in school, then you are most certainly are as schools take this issue seriously), you are covered.

a lot of peeps are afraid of this disease---it can be scary---but remember you are looking for obscure reasons you have it.  that is a ha person's way of thinking.  a person who has it, there is NO doubt.   a friend of mine, got it in college.  that was umpteen years ago before vaccines were available

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

Thanks for replying.  I've never had the menactra shot and it's only offered to young adults (17-25) here in Norway.  It's too late to apply for this years round of vaccination, but I'll definitely get my menactra shot next year. Am I still safe?

My mother-in-law had meningitis last year. Trust me, if you had it, there would be no doubt. You wouldn't be typing messages on here.
