Anyone have this feeling with Zoloft?
« on: March 02, 2013, 01:59:39 PM »
I upped my zoloft dose from 75 to 100 right after christmas. So it has been long egnough I think to know if it is leveld out. The past couple days my anxiety has been alot less but around 3 in the afternoon i feel like it starts to ware off and my anxiety seems to kick in..?.. Also i have been feeling numb like emotionaly, not sad not happy ugh frustrating. Also more agitated! >:(  What the heck is going on? Is it not working or should I switch to something else? I have been on zoloft for about 5 years and started out at 25 went to 50 then 75 over the years, went up to 100 because i felt my anxiety was getting crazy again, never really felt like this before on it. Anyone felt or feel this way on zoloft? Any sugestions? Thanks! Oh and I have a hard time concertrating..Grr!

I was on zoloft for about 7 years and then my anxiety started up again.  I guess it just quit working.  My doc switched me to prozac, which I've been on for over a year, and just added cymbalta to help with depression and pain with endometriosis.  Don't be afraid to switch if a med isn't working.

If it isn't working well 2 months after upping the dose then it probably won't in the future. I think you need to discuss moving to another antidepressant. Celexa (citalopram) and Lexapro (escitalopram) have a proven record of working when another SSRI has failed. My pick would be Celexa because its wider dose range gives more room to refine the dose.

In light of what we now know about how antidepressants work, I think sub therapeutic maintenance dosing should be discouraged. It may be the equivalent of sub therapeutic antibiotic dosing, breeding resistance. The usual minimum therapeutic Zoloft dose is 50mg.

How hard do you think it would be to switch to another med? Would I continue on zoloft lower dose and and the new med? or ? What about effects switching?

If it is to another SSRI then you should be able to switch to an equivalent dose of the new drug overnight. If to a SNRI or tricyclic then generally simultaneously tapering off the SSRI while tapering onto the other drug works well. As there are differences even between SSRIs you may experience some effects for a few days, so I suggest you begin just before a weekend to have a couple of days for things to settle down. Generally the side-effects are less severe than when first starting antidepressants.
