rabies from air ntransmission?
« on: March 02, 2013, 02:26:55 AM »
FREEKINGG OUT, I was up in a tree and saw a dead racoon in the bushes and when I got down from the tree I walked to get sticks anddirt to cover thedead racoon and I held my breathe and would go to the side of the tree that didn't have the dead racoon to breathe fresh air. I didn't do that every breathe, i don't know how long it's been dead and IDK what it has died from, I heard that where I live rabies isn't much of an issue but that was yrs. back. freeked out NEED AN AWNSER PLEASE! I need to know if rabies can be spread by air in my situation and the likely hood of that happening in my situation? the racoon looked months gone by the color.

100% not possible.  Rabies is a virus that is transmitted from the infected animals saliva via bite. (Or scratching and licking I suppose) Anyway, you are not going to find it in the animal unless the saliva was really fresh and you rubbed it on an open sore.  But it is not an airborne transmittable disease.

I live in the middle of a forest. I'm sure critters die all the time. I breathe that air every day. No rabies.

Same here dear. I've lived in the middle of nowhere for a very long time, and have seen my fair share of dead raccoons. Hell, when I was a little kid we poked them with sticks and none of use ever got rabies. You're fine.

thank you all so much, now I can climb that tree and walk in the forest without freeking out and Mir, I used to do the same thing too! I also remember I saw a dead racoon near my house and I picked up its skull when i was younger, it was so cool! although now I don't poke dead critters anymore because it's gross and Hypochondria keeps me away from things I should stay away from.
