Fear of time passing. Chronophobia?
« on: March 01, 2013, 10:57:34 AM »
Hi

Wandering if anyone can help me find out if it is a phobia, or ocd, or just anxiety that I have

The last 5 weeks I have developed a fear of passing time as in the present. What I mean is I am thinking to myself 'everything that I am doing, that is happening now is going to be in the past' and it frightens the hell out of me.
I have had this fear occasionally in the past when I have had severe bouts of anxiety, but they have been shortlived.
This time it has been much worse, although I seem after being on meds for 4 weeks to be able to sort of put it to the back of my mind and distract it a bit
It has been very bad this last month or so. Is there anyone out there who has some advice for me please

It sounds like something you might obsess over with at times. So it an anxiety condition of sorts. Time comes and time goes. I think this is something we all know and accept. So what exactly is it that you fear about time? That it is moving too quickly? Just trying to understand the phobia. May be able to make more sense out of it if we understood the fear exactly.

Normally I can accept that time comes and goes, but since the anxiety started 6 weeks ago, I freak over 'what I have done has now passed' or I think I freak over it. I can put it to the back of my mind quite a bit and just tell myself it is my anxiety giving me these thoughts and my mind has become sensitised to it. I don't really know what I fear. Maybe it's a fear of dying or not having enough time left

Time comes and time goes. It is what we do with it during our lifetime that matters most of all. You could fear it for life. Thus forgetting to live youe life. In 50 years time I think you would like to look back and say ' look what I have done '. Rather than look back and think ' I have spend half a century sitting here worrying about time and death. Start to keep a diary. A diary of things you do with your time. That way you can always looks back and see where the time has gone and what you have gained from it.

This is exactly what happens to me!  And ever since I became 42 and now 43! I can be in the middle of doing something and suddenly have the panic of: this is now in the past and want to die with anxiety!

I am not sure of your age, but I am thinking it is because I am this age that I fear getting closer and closer to old age; and doesn't help with having lines on my face!!

The only thing I do is to talk reason to myself and it does help or pray to my Creator - I am a christian. I also focus on what the future holds and so am able to calm myself down.

It is a horrible feeling!
