Wisdom Teeth
« on: February 28, 2013, 04:38:55 PM »
Hey all so I have a few questions about wisdom teeth...

I am having some tooth trouble lately - one of my wisdom teeth have a cavity and one has broke and I need to get to the dentist but i know they are going to want to pull them out. I have heard alot of horror stories about getting your wisdom teeth out and I am totally freaked to have surgery - i had a bad experience with anesthetic when i was young and i just dont think I can go through with that by choice. So if i refuse to get them out will they still fix them? I know it sounds stupid that I am such a chicken about getting put under but alot of my friends have had alot of trouble after they have got them out- My bottom wisdom teeth are a little impacted but before i got the cavity they didnt hurt or cause me any pain.

So just wondering what your views are ..

Just get them out. You'll be rid of them and you'll get the chance to face a fear—two for one.

I had my wisdom teeth out about ten years ago. I had no complications. In fact it was, while not exactly a pleasurable experience, it was not bad at all.

Wisdom teeth get worse as you get older. If you wait to get them out, it will be a much bigger deal. I also didn't have any complications (ok, aside from that somehow it made my teeth move and now they aren't quite straight anymore, but oh well...) and I would say it's only as annoying as having braces, just for a much shorter amount of time.

My sister had one of the worst wisdom tooth extractions you can have and you know what?  She's fine now. It wasn't her favorite month of her life, but she's all better now and glad she had them out.

I had 4 deeply impacted wisdom teeth ..... only thing I remember is sitting in the chair overlooking this beautiful lake next to the oral surgeon's office, then waking up at home.

Very, very minimal pain and it was taken care of with Tylenol.  Lots of swelling - I looked like a chipmunk.  Only thing that bugged me were the holes that I kept playing around with my tongue. LOL

My youngest son had his out, too - all four.  Absolutely no problem.  His were impacted, too.

I still have my 2 lower ones, and they are extremely hard to keep clean, and they both have had to have fillings, too.
I think more dentists will recommend having them removed than not. They also are teeth that are known to cause lots of problems on down the line.
How about explaining to your dentist that you are very anxious. I think that a lot of dentists now days will cater to and take care of extremely anxious patients. Or maybe try an oral surgeon.

Best to you-  :winking0008:

Get it pulled out, if necessary! I've had 2 teeth pulled recently. One was a wisdom tooth, and everything was fast and perfect. Another one was a " regular" tooth, pulled not by my usual dentist. I got a "dry socket"  on this tooth. Yep, it was painful, but it is absolutely not life threatening and easily treatable. So nothing to worry about, even if turns out not the easiest way!
