Do you ever have a brief "symptom-free" window after waking up?
« on: January 31, 2013, 01:54:01 PM »
Even when my "symptoms" rage all day, I've noticed that when I go to sleep, things are usually okay throughout the night. If I wake up for a minute and go back to sleep, I really don't think about pains an sensations, and there are none. And when I wake up in the morning, I often have a few minutes when I'm awake but not really "thinking" where I don't feel anything. It's only when my mind snaps to attention and I think "oh great, is this going to be yet another day where I'm paralyzed by terror?" that whatever I'm worrying about begins to manifest again. Is this a way to differentiate between real symptoms and symptoms caused by the mind? I mean, if I sleep in a strange position I'll be feeling horrible back pain from the second I wake up because that pain is a consequence of something real, but it's not until my mind wakes up and I begin to feel dread and fear again that my symptoms come back. It's like the anxiety part of my brain is completely shut down by sleep.

Anyone else ever experience something like this?

Yup, every single time I had anxiety-related "symptoms" in the past, this is what happened. Always those few, brief blissful moments before your brain wakes up and starts to focus on whatever you think is wrong again.

If nothing else, it's a great indicator that whatever you're feeling is being amplified ten-fold by worrying about it all day.

Always.  None of the symptoms that I EVER have wake me up at night or cause me any problems staying asleep.  And when I wake up and get my kids ready for school I'm always totally fine.  It's when they're gone and I sit down to get work done I think "Oh no, here we go again".  And here we always go again. :)

Right now I'm paranoid about my hands shaking.  But as I say that and think "my hands are SO shaking" I'm typing at a rapid rate and making almost no typing mistakes.  If my hands were shaking as much as I feel like they are I wouldn't be able to type like this.  But do they shake when I am making my kids breakfast or texting my daughter to confirm that she made it to school or playing Temple Run while waiting for the bus? Never. :)

Yes. Always. When I wake up in the morning, i am always symptom free but as the day progresses everything begins and then gets worst.

That is usually what I tell myself when I think that something I am afraid of is serious.  If it WERE serious why does it not wake me up at night and why do I NEVER feel it in the morning?  Why ONLY when the day gets started and I start thinking "Will my fingers twitch today?"

exactly, exactly, exactly.

our minds are powerful things.

i wish it was as easy to will away those fears as it is for them to come on.

i love this...
