Have a few issues and could use the boards help.
« on: January 28, 2013, 06:42:20 PM »
I have severe generalized anxiety.  I am currently struggling with ruminating thoughts.  I realize they aren't worth stressing about but, my mind (amygdala) keeps popping them to the forefront of my thoughts.  It has even caused an injury in my sinus which only makes the situation worse.   Does anyone have advice on how to deal with them?  Has anyone had an injury caused by strain from stress?

Thanks in advance for any reply.

Hello, thanks for posting this because I know it wasn't easy for me to admit publicly about my issues with anxiety. Things that have worked for me may also be helpful for you. I liked to write in my journal a lot to help expose and become more aware of all the thoughts that are giving me trouble. Then when I wrote it down it gave me a different way to explore my feelings. I also found a lot of great books at my local library about dealing with anxiety. I would like to recommend to you:

The Anxiety and Worry Workbook by David Clark & Aaron Beck

+

Thoughts and Feelings (taking control of your moods and your life) by Matthew mckay, Martha Davis and Patrick Fanning

a regular physical exercise has also been really help to stay healthy with the body and the brain. I also find its good to think about some of the emotions and thoughts when I'm working out so it feels like i'm doing physical and mental exercises at the same time.

Finally I would also like to really recommend any kind of social activities, whether it be hanging out with friends and family or volunteering for something you feel strongly about.

Take care and good luck

Thank you for the reply..

I am getting better at recognizing that it is a ruminating thought.  The trouble is letting it go.  Its like my mind is a dog playing with a chew toy.  It wrestles with it over and over again (sometimes aggressively) until boredom kicks in.  Then it bites at it gradually until something else catches its attention.   They can last for days.   I wish I could figure out a way to let it go at 1st thought.
