Worried that I have been deliberately pushed aside at work :(
« on: January 24, 2013, 05:38:05 AM »
Hi all. To cut a long story short, I'm a school counsellor, fairly new to the role. I need to develop my leadership skills and part of that has been inservicing teachers at my school; ie presenting on mental health etc at staff meetings. When I aksed to do this in the past, my principal and vice principal have kind of rolled their eyes at one another ( I actually saw this) and my prinicpal (whose job it is to be nice and support me) has let me do it. They've mostly gone pretty well (prinicipal butted in to one presentation) but I can tell they don't really like me doing it - like they think I'm only doing it to get it on my resume.

Anyway, the new staff meeting timetable has been released and all of the staff learning opportunities are scheduled on days I don't work. I cant' help feel like this is to keep me from asking to do more presentations. :(

How to cope with this? Any positive and constructive advice appreciated

Not sure how things work in the US. But over here teachers and school workers would be part of a Union. Each school would have a union rep. So if any worker felt they were asked to do too much or they felt others were treating them unfairly they would go to the union rep and have the matter dealt with. The union rep would step in and arrange a meeting if was proved that the worker was been treated unfairly. But I live in Ireland. It probably differs from country to country. If anything I would make a point of showing the principle your timetable and how the days all fall on your days off. Ask is there a reason for this? Just see what kind of answer you get back. Like I said earlier, over here, it would all be done through a union rep.
