Antibiotic scared to take it
« on: January 18, 2013, 06:49:41 PM »
I went to the doctor the other day and he said I may have a sinus infection. He then prescribed be an antibiotic that will help infection and in case it's cellulitus fix that too. Now I have the antibiotic and I am scared to take it. I'm working myself into a frenzy over it! If I don't take it I might die if I do take it I might die. I'm so scared of the side effects what do I do?

take the pill.

It is pure d ridiculous for you to think you'll die by taking it.  you won't.  what it will do is fix the infection.

MOST anxiety happens at the subconscious level.  JUST because you don't feel consciously anxious or had a day or two of calm doesn't mean your mind & body are relaxed.  It can take months of reduced anxiety before a body goes back to a more non-reactive state.

I do this ALL the time.  Throw away the papers that come with it and don't look up the side effects.  You will be amazed at the lack of side effects you have!  The implications of not treating the infection are far worse!  Take the meds!

Any suggestion on to avoid the massive panic that will happen as soon as I take the pill? My biggest fear is that I will be allergic to it. Although I've never been allergic to anything. My son is allergic to penicylen (sp) so I think maybe that allergy is laying dormant in me and will arise the moment I take the antibiotic . The doctor prescribed cefdinir. Has anyone else ever taken it?

You're certainly not going to die from it, but you could have a reaction to it, such as diarrhea.  Take a probiotic - either 3 hours before or after taking the antibiotic).  It will keep your digestive tract in order and the good bacteria in check.

Take a leap of faith -- swallow the damn thing and go about your business.  Seriously.  Or resign yourself to being miserable from the sinus infection, your choice.  It's probably 1/1000th as risky as driving to the store.

I go by the-------- I won't get over a fear, learn to manage the catastrophic feeling by not facing the fear.   The nice thing about facing a fear is that you get mighty cocky that you are more powerful than your fear.  If you have a panic attack, you have a panic attack and you will survive it, too .  Still by taking the pill, you've thumbed your nose at an irrational fear.  AGain you'll get that cocky pride.

If it makes you feel Better, take it when someone is with you. If you're going to have a reaction it is more than likely going to happen pretty quickly, after that the side effects  if any aren't life threatening. I feel for you because I have the same issue because I have had bad reactions. More than likely you'll be fine, severe reactions are rare.

I panic about taking new medicine. Even antibiotics. The last time I was prescribed antibiotics I picked up the prescription and then went right back to the doctor's office. I told the nurse about my fears, she said no problem, gave me some water and said I could take one right there and if i had any problems they would take care of it. Very kind of them. I took the pill...sat there for a bit...and I lived to tell about it! No reaction. I know it might sound silly to some people, but sometimes these fears get a hold of you and won't let go. But, I really wanted to get rid of my sinus infection at the time. It worked.

If it makes you feel better, I am pregnant and on an antibiotic for a sinus thing that seems to have migrated to my chest. I did NOT want to take the antibiotic, but in the end decided it was probably worse for my baby for me to risk getting pneumonia from bronchitis that I didn't treat than it was to take the Class B antibiotic. Infections are not something to mess around with.
