Can my tonsils swell shut?? Trying not to panic.

So here's the deal. For the past week I've been battling bucket loads of white post nasal drip (sorry, gross) with this irritated/itchy feeling where your sinuses drain down the back of your throat and a kind of foul taste in my mouth that comes back as soon as I finish brushing my teeth.

I decided to get a flash light and look at the back of my throat just a while ago and to my surprise - my tonsils are swollen and red! Weird thing is - there is no pain. It doesn't hurt to swollow or anything.

This may seem like a minor issue to normal people but to ME this could lead to a major freak out. Can my tonsils swell shut in my sleep, slowly suffocating me?? What if I am having some kind of crazy allergic reaction (no allergies noted) and nothing but my tonsils are swelling?

Lordy me. Help!!!

Just in my opinion this sounds like some kind of virus or simple cold and I honestly don't think your tonsils will swell shut. :) I think it would be really painful before it would even come close to that happening so you're most likely fine :) I would just go see a doctor and see what tey say and in the mean time try drinking some warm tea, it's really soothing for sore throats. Hope you feel better soon!

Try gargling with salt water.  It reduces swelling.

No your tonsils will not swell shut. You will be fine in a couple of days its probably a cold.

I had my tonsils swell up badly once from strep throat. Gargling with salt water is what I was told to do to reduce the swelling. It worked well.
