pap test results...concerned
« on: January 17, 2013, 11:02:49 AM »
Okay, I talked to the nurse and she said my pap results were:  ascus and negative for hpv.  She said the dr would give me a call sometime to let me know the next step but that a result of ascus and negative hpv is considered a normal test so mostly likely I would be asked to come back in a year.

My concern:  Online it said if you are negative for hpv then things like std's, having intercourse before the test and tampons can cause ascus.  I don't have an std, haven't been sexually active in a year and hadn't used a tampon in three weeks.  So what does this mean?

I don't know anything about ascus, but what I will say is that if you're getting regular pap tests, then you don't have to be worried about cervical cancer. If they see something that concerns them, they can just scrape it out before it has a chance to become anything bad. I would just wait (I know it's hard) to hear from your doctor, ask him whatever questions you have, and then believe him.

My wife's friend had a similar result and the doctor told her that she had ascus and a negative HPV test, and not to worry.
He told her that ascus are slightly abnormal cells that are typically nothing to be concerned about if not coupled with a
positive HPV test.

I've had ascus results a couple of times (never had HPV), and it is pretty much a non-issue.  Each time I went back in 6 months for a recheck and it was normal.
